nerlval of Enrrlnp:. Since Cleopatra's time and her magnificent" lVflrl earring, which played such a prominent part in her life, or, rather, death, this particular piece of feminine jewelry has conic In ami pone out regularly with the tide of popularity. Just now earrings are considered quite the correct thin, though for 10 or 13 years they have scarcely been worn at all. The "groMTi ups" of that period are probably prepared to welcome thera as old friends. To the others it will be a new experience and means having the cars pierced Jewelers have been predicting for the last two years the revival of this fashion, and there has been a marked tendency in its direction, and now it Is generally admitted that earrings are positively to be worn. Be It understood, however, there are conditions that must be rigidly observed. Not any kind of earrings may be worn. In fact there Is a limited number to choose from. The principal thing is that t jey must not swing. Old earrirgs may be brought forth from their velvet resting places of many years and undergo inspection. If they would be converted into strictly modern or.es, they must pay a visit te the jeweler and be reset Two settings are permissible, the screw and the French, this latter a combination of the screw and the old fashioned "drop," hut without the swing. Another thing prohibited Is the single diamond, once elegantly styled a "solitaire." Fearls and turquoises, alone or set round with diamonds, are ail you havt to select from if you con fine yourself to the earrings of fashion. Of course pearls, lustrous and of fairly good size, are favorites. These are rare and expensive enough to be much desired by smart women.

A Mean Feminine Trick. This edifying conversation was heard ox. a Norristown train. The two girls were rather pretty, and one of them carried a novel from the free library. First Girl So your engagement is broken off? Second Girl Yes, I broke it off last Wednesday night. First Girl But you still have that beautiful ring? Didn't he expect you to return it to him? Second Girl I suppose he did, but 1 got around that matter splendidly. I have half a mind to tell you all about It First Girl Oh. yes: do tell me! Second GI'i-YVell, I will. You see, 1 knew I should throw him over on Wednesday r.'ght. so that afternoon I bought frorJ a fakir on Eighth street a 10 cent rinir that resembled this one considerably. We were sitting on the front porch, and. just as I had hoped, we had a dreadful quarrel. "I am done with you now," I said. And I took off the ring and thrcw.it cut in the middle of the street. A trolley car came along and passed over it. "There is your ring." I said. "Go hunt for it if you want it." "Oh. it doesn't matter about the ring," he said. "I wasn't thinking of the ring. Mary. You were wise to throw it away, for It is of no value to either of us now." Then he went away, little suspecting the trick 1 had played on him. lie was easy, wasn't he? First Girl Wasn't he easy, though? Philadelphia Record.

The Englishman nnl Ills Order. An Englishman at a Chicago hotel rrdered a trap. He ordered it of an Intelligent looking key clerk behind the dt.sk. Then he went up stairs to his room to prepare himself for the drive. He waited half an hour for the announcement that the - vehicle was below. He began to wonder if this was an example of the American hustle whose reputation had crossed the Atlantic. Presently came a knock on the door. "Cine In." bade the Englishman. Entered a mechanical lopking man In his shirt sleeves. Where's the hole?" was his question. Hole'"' queried the Englishman. "I wanted a trap." "Here it Is," said the toiler, "and it'll catch that mouse sure." The Englishman's mouth opened In astonishment. "Mouse! What do you mean? Who are you. anyhow?" "I'm the hotel carpenter, sir, and I've brought up the trap you ordered!" The Englishman glared. Then It penetrated his Saxon wits, and he roared. He gave the carpenter half a dollar and swore the Joke for once was on America.

For the Treeklr Ctrl. Although certain poets have considered freckles to be beauty spots, calling them by the euphonious name of 'sun kisses." those who possess them regard the little burnt orange spots as defects and are anxious to get rid of them. Generally speaking, there are two kinds of freckles summer freckles, which are ephemeral, and constitutional or chronic freckles. The lirs-t kind can be treated by applying such a lotion as the following: Sulphate of zinc, 20 grains; compound tincture of lavender. 2 drams; rosewater. half a pint. Another good remedy for summer freckles Is composed of rosewater, 0 ounces; glyeerin. half an ounce; cherry laurel water, two and a half drams; simple tincture of benzoin, two and a half drams; borax, one and i half drams. Apply night and morning. Those who prefer an ointment may use: Levigated sulphate of zinc, 2) grains; elderllower ointment, 1 ounce. Mix well in a mortar.

A Bearer's Toilet. It is an interesting sight to watch the outlaw at his evening toilet. To begin with, instead of sitting up with his large, flat, ribbed tail protruding behind him, he tucked It forward between his hind legs and sat upon It Then with his hand hecarefully combed his long hair, using both hands at the same time. There were many places, however, that could not be reached In this way, for his arms are very short and his body very large, so he combed these otherwise Inaccessible places with his hind feet, using first one and then the other. The entire operation was performed jvith the utmost deliberation and care and occupied more than a quarter of an hour, so that by the time It was completed daylight had almost Tanished. My presence did not appear to disturb him in the least, though I sat on the ground within three feet of him thkt I might the better note his various attitudes, for It is not often one has an opportunity of watching a beaver at such close range Everybody's Magazine. Matrimony In Gilbert Islands. Women of the Giloert islands being merely regarded as cittle or any other property, writes Arthur Inkersley In The Overland Monthly, the matrimonial knot is easily tied and Jusfas easily untied. If a man fancies a girl, he gelzes her by the hair of the head, wherever she may be, despite her protestations, and drags her away to his home. Her resistance is not often serious, the pretense of refusal being due to the coquettishiitss inherent in the sex. When the couple reach the house of the groom, a wedding feast is furnished forthwith, to which all the Immediate friends of the bride and bridegroom are invited. But an acceptance of the Invitation implies the contribution of some viands to the entertainment. Mct.rimony is attended by.no further ceremony than this. When a husband grows weary of his wife, he elniply orders her to leave him, and If the does oct he turns her out of doors.

Ilorr lie Talked. Rubinstein, after a concert tour In Spain, was asked: "Dc you understand

"No." he said. "Then you had to converse with the Spaniards in French, I suppose?" "Not every Spaniard speaks French." "Then how in tie world did you talk to them?" "With the piano," said Rubinstein, with a smile.

In the world of amusements there was none so exalted or so Illustrious as John Robinson; and from ihe northern limits of civilization on this great North American Continent to the ru'.f -washed shores of its southern coast, his name was a

household word. No city, town, village or hamlet I-Jt what was ever ready to greet his show as a welcome visitor. For the past thirty-seven years I.John F. And I am warranted in the belief that there will be no hesitation on the part of the amusement-loving public in substantiating the clahn that 1 have each year Infused the exhibitions with fresh life and vigor; penr.Ittins nothing to be emitted from the personnel of my companies, nor from the attractiveness of my collections and the svrling novehyand merits of my ring acts and spec!al features r.ew, attractive, sensatioral or prominent that c.tpital could' purchase, or enterprise, energy and research procure. It is the determination cf the Management to make the present year prorrlnent In amusement annals as a Grand Gala Day Holiday Season, and one which rhall be ever memorable in the history of tented amusrmens.
