The new steps at the Methodist church will be appreciated by the public. O. H. Patterson, son of T. J. Patterson, who has been quite k-k for everal days is convalescing. Sr. John J. Stark, of L ifayette, Ind., has charge of the dry goods department of Little Mack'd store. Mrs. E nanuel Camp, of Arqoa, was taken to the insane asylum, a' I'idianapDlis, lagt week by Sheriff Atl?y. The farmers of Union township are making pieparations for a grand township fair at Yellow River Grange September 27th. The publisher of the Bourbon Mirror and his wife have been ou an editorial excursion to Michigan and report a good time. Collator Moon, of Warsaw, visited the Bently huckleberry m ir?h or "Stamping Ground, Tuesday, in the interest of Uuncle Sam. Rev. Q. H. Thayer's sermons at the M. E. Church Sunday were able, lole. argumenM v.. and highly edifying to those that attended. We are indebted to W. Sertenright and ScofiVld are meeting with much encourage meat In their efforts to have a (rood fair in Marshall county this fail. Warm days and cool nights, no body feeling well, and sickness predicted by many unless we have a good rain and a change of weather soon. Miss Belle Becker, of Fort Wayne, It vbl'ing Mrs. E Bicker, of this city. She and Mrs B. Wolt are going to start on an E tstern trip Friday night. The Marshall county fair will be held at the Plymouth fair grounds O -tober 2, 3, and 4. The fair will undoubtedly be the tb best ever bekl in the county. George Hoflfer, residing four mibs north east of Plymouth, will sell his personal property at public s tie to m rrow. He is guiug to Wisconsin. ( Our j b press has made more than fifty thousani inpresslous in the last t 0 week-. Bring on your work; this is the place to get all kinds of printing done neatly and cheaply. John M jeller celebrated bi- 32nd birthday in stjle yesterday. It was a!aq the birtbday of his little soa.

We understand the Reformed social at the residence of Jonathan Brown, last Thursday evening was a very enjoyable affair, and the refreshments, furnished by Mark Jacoby, were such as would tickle the palate of the most fastidious. The Episcopal church has cushioned seats now, which are verv comfortable to set upon, and are, in their way, a great impromement to the church, but we would suggest, for the comforts of its attendants, that a foot or more be supplied to the backs of the scats. We have a lettej from Walter Piper, who came from Illinois with us and helped run The Republican for eight months. He Is in the Leduer office at Fairfield, Iowa. He writes that he is feeling well and doing well. We sh til publish his description of the State, its people, crops, politics, etc., next week. D. S. Conger, one of the old settlers, who by hard work has obtained a competency, made us a pleasant call Saturday. Mr. Conger Is still active and energetic, and will do three times the work that can be got out of those fe lows that always claim to be out of employment because there is no work to do. Thr Rkfublicax has no ready printed or plate outside. You always find good reading and something no on every page. We would call attention this week to "Life in Memphis," "Voorhees and ;he Soldiers," "ShermauV Opinion of National Bauka" and other good articles on the first page, and "Fraud Proved by Figures" on the fourth page. Somebody telegraphed from Rochester to the Indianapolis Journal last Thursday that Mj r Bitter-, editor of the Sjy, had b ti egged and horse-wbipped by an indignant widow named Loucke. Bitiers says, "tbepersou who sent the telegraph is a black mailer and a liar," but it is evident that some of the women down there are not "very sweet" towards the Major. A subscriber aks the IndiaoapoJournal if there is any process by which rancH butter can be made sweet, and is told that the rancid taste cannot be wholly removed but th it by boiliug the butter and carefully removing the scum which arises it can be very much Improved. Auothr process is to wash it in a weak brine of pure salt, but the first method is probably the best Mr. and Mrs. C. T. of In wood, are among the callers that have left us substantial encouragement ihia week. The REPmucis withes them all the happiuess such noble fellows deserve. D. L. Dickenson, Alderman of the TnUd Waid, one if the best Republicans and best business men la the county, gave us something this week to help pay the boys, because bis subscrip'ion had expired. John Baxter, of North township, one of the fifty staunch Republicans who did net veto the Greenback ticket in that township last fall, made us a pleasant call Tuesday aud paid for Thb Republican another year. The South Bend Tribune says: "Hon. H. O. Thayer, of Plymouth, is frequently mentioned as Republican candidate for Congress in this District." The Tribune might have added, we think, "he will be nominated and elected." There are a cumber of teachers In town attending the Normal School. Judging from the appearance of those - we have seen, .Marshall county can produce as fine looking, intelligent a corps of teachers as any county in the State. There are, we know, many happy men in Plymouth, and many who feel proud of their wealth. Intelligence, influence 01 something else; but the happiest and proudest man among them all this week is a printer named Daniel B. Langenbaugh. It's a boy. J. M. O'Blenls, one of the good teachers attending the Normal School, dropped in and paid his subscription Saturday. If every teacher in the county would invest a dollar or two for Thb Republican they would find that they were richer in the end. W. F. New ho use, one of the best Republicans in Green township called and paid bis subscription yesterday. While all our subscribers are doing well by s we should be pleased to have any that are in arrears drop in and pay us while hauling in their wheat. A large number of Plymouthites are rusticating at Maxenkuckee this we-'k, Mijor Cooper has left town and everything is so quiet that but for the immense loads of wheat coming to town and the smiling faoe&of the farmers and merchants over the prospect of good times, it would be decidedly dull.

High School pupilä will be in attendance on Friday, Sept. 12 th, at 2 p. m. Tbe temperance camp meeting at LaPorte baa not been so largely attended as was expected. The managers neglected to start it off with a "boom;" but some of tbe finest temperance lecturers of tbe world are there, and tbe attendance should be large. An old citizan suggested to us the other day that if tbe meeting would adjouru to the fair grounds in Plymouth for a week during tbe begiuuiug of August, that he believed they oould give it a send off for tbe remainder of the time that it could get in no other way. He said there were hundreds in Marshall county who might be benefitted by attending the meeting who would not think of going to LaPorte. Our flowing well would furnish pu rewater for a hundred thousand temperance people, while tbe saloon men would agree to sell three glasses of beer for a dime, or three glasses of whisky for twentyfive cents and run the risk of being converted from the error of their ways by tbe temperance speeches, and possibly sDme of them might be
