Annapolis, Md which has hitherto been a Democratic city, elected a Republican Mayer, City Counselor and two-thirds of the Councilmeo. Straws show which way the wind blows. "
For the year ending June 30 there were landed at New York 99 224 immigrants. Hard times in Europe, aod the general unsettled political condition, will oause a large immigration to America the coming" yar.
Tilden will probably be the head and Uncle Jimmy Williams the tail of the Democratic ticket in 1880. Oov. Williams as a candidate for Vice President will wear broadcloth instead of "blue jans." Hon. James M . Ashley, of Ohio, formerly an ardent R publican, but who has for several years been a worker in the Democratic ranks, announces his determination to take the stump for the Republican ticket. One by one the prodigals are returning.
The National Greenback Labor party of New York has called a State Convention to meet at I tica, August 28. to nominate aState ticket. There are so many Greenback parties, that we cannot tell our readers whether this means the Ewinjr Democratic wing of the party, the Carv, Cooper wing, or "Brick" Pomeroy socialist wing. But it does not make any difference which of these factions holds a convention, our readers will see that a Greenback party no longer ex ists. The word is only associated with other names of parties to try to catch a few men who suppose that they are Greenbackera, and that there is a Greenback party in existence. The growth of postoflice receipts is a marvel. A few days ago a statement was completed at the postoflice department, showing receipts for the quarter ending March 31 last. Several months were required to make full settlement with every postoflice. etc., and quarterly statements are therefore delayed. From his balance sheet it appears that the receipts for the flr?t three months of the current year were $7.980,068 09. the largest quartet's receipts in the history of the department. This is nearly equal to the annual receipts in 1859 and in 1860. showing four fold growth. Estimating by the receipts of the first quarter of tbi year, the total will reach nearly $32.000.000, or more than double the total receipts of 1867.

The yellow fever has not abated in Memphis, but good work is being done and only eight new cases were reported yesterday. No new cases are reported at New Orleanp, and the city is being thoroughly disinfected, but there are three long weary montbs yet during which the fever may be feared in the South, and the outlook is anything but hopeful.
Under existing laws the national banks are entitled sixteen millions of dollars more of circulation than they now have. National banking is free to all those who wish to engage in it, and if mora currency is needed and banks are making as much money as our Greenback friends claim, we should like for some one to tell us why three hundred new national banks are not organized im mediately. The Charleston Neva makes a full and free confession that there were frauds and outrage- committed in South Carolina to carry tbe State for the Democrats in 1876; but says a supreme necessity for doing such things existed then, that does not ex 1st now; and fears if such practices are continued the people of the State will boob be at the mercy of a set of men who will make the State not worth raving. Tbe "chickens are coming home to roost," as the abettors of the bull-dozers and murderers will jet find to their sotrow.
I lumber and other property were swept away, and many of the coal mines flooded, the miners in some of j them barely escaping drowning. In ! tbe mines near Elizabeth, tbe men
waded out through water up to their chins. Neatly all tbe railroad lines centering in Pittsburgh, with the ex ceptlon of the Pennsylvania Central, report more or less damage and con sequent delay of traffic. All the grain, potatoes, etc , in the submerged district are destroyed. Two children are reported drowned.
Dr. Luke P. Black-urn. the Democratic candidate for Governor of Kentucky, says be has done more for that State than Jesus Christ ever did. There is not an other State in the United States save Kentucky that could elect a man Governor, who would be guilty of such blasphemy; yet If Blackburn sent infected clothing to northern cities during tbe war, for the purpose of spreading yellow fever, as is charged ag inst him, and charge which be has never denied, it would seem that he is too bad a man to be elected, even in Kentucky.
The harmony that exists in the Greenback party just now is wonder ful Over in Ohio the leaders are calling each other liars, thieves, trait ors, &c. The other day "Brick" Pomeroy learned that Colonel Lee CraudallV committee at Washington was sending out circulars to Green back clubs, asking them to send iu ieir charters for revision, and 10 send fifty cents along to pay for revising &c. As "Biick" has been charging three dollars for this work, he got very augry and wrote Col. Craudal: "The impudence of you thieves at Washington in something
I beyond the comprehension of men
who are houest, but nothing new to those who understand your tricks of trade. Publication of your very contemptible trick will be made in tbe Greeuback papers of the country, 0 that the people may be warned of you and against ail such mean, contemptible, underhanded tricks that are so readily engaged in by those who have no principle." Crandall writiug from Washington, under date of July 16, says to Pomeroy: "You are entirely misinformed, every word and line of your letter is false. Tl.e whole fabrication proves you to be an unmitigated scoundrel; void of every principle of honor known to a gen tleman." If tbe Greenback leaders are half as bad as they accuse each other of being, they are a great deal worse than it would be possible for Republicans or Democrats to become.

Tears ago Emerson Et bridge, of
Tennessee, said that the Democratic 1 part was at that time composed of a few smart men who were leaders aod a lot of d d fools that followed them. This remark of his was brought forcibly to to our mind by reading an article said to have been written by a North township Greenbacker. Tbe man who will deny official figures and take in their stead tbe assertions ! of a knave, is a fool who cannoi know any better, and any man, who in tbe present condition of our finances clamors for "flat" money, is a knave who is "on tbe make," or belongs to that class whom Ethridge says follow

The merit of Republican financiering wa never more clearly demonstrated than in tbe non partisan re ception of Secretary Sherman in Bostou the other day. Democrats vied with R-'publicans in doing honor to him, aud tbe Greenbackers must have been shamed by tiie encomiums passed up n the champion of resutup lion by eminent political associates of Thurman and Hendricks. The speech of the Democratic Mayor of Boston in view of the awkward posi lion of bis party on the financial question was most significant. He frankly gave to the Secretary credit of largely contributing by bis wise councils and skillful management, to the improvement of our various in dustlies which Ls every wh re becoru ing apparent. "We have great rea son to believe,'' he said, "that this prosperity is likely to be enduring, for we have now returned to those sound and j i-t principles of tlnunee which should govern and guide our commerc j iu tbe future,' basing our hopes upon the only solid and sure foundation upon which business can be successfully carried on upon that currency which is alone regarded by the commercitd world as sterling, a currency which is convertible, upon demand, into coin." At the same reception were tbiity B ink Presidents, Democratic and Republican, who bad taken active patt in the work of resumption and refunding, so grandly carried out by the Secretary.
