It was the most severe storm ever known there, and people were very much alarmed.

Washington Letter. Washington, July 11, 1879. The result of the year's work at the Treasury department is very gratifying to every Republican and lover of his country, although it is not possible to make up the conclusions with such accuracy, owing to the absence of date from distant revenue points, yet we may state that the gross receipts of the year ending June 30, last were estimated to be $274,031919, against $257,763.878 for the proceeding year, an increase of $16,271,038 made tip as follows: Customs, $7.311,795; Internal Revenue, $2,332.154; Miscellaneous, $6,027,080. Tbe receipts exceed tbe aggregate estimates presented to Congress in Dec, last by tbe Secretary of the Treasury by $9,500,000, The ordinary expenditures for tbe last fiscal year were $161,088.252, against $134,463452 during the preceeding year, an increase of $26 621 800. Tbi includes $5 .500.000 paid on account of the fisheries award, $5,500, 000 on account of pension arrearages, and $1.800.000 paid Captain Eada for improvements at the mouth of tbe Mississippi liver. Deducting those three extraordinary items, the excess of ordinary expenditures for tbe last fiscal year, compared with the year ending June 30th, 1878, was about $13.000.000 The net surplus of reve -cue over expenditures is $7.490.000. One word should be said with reference to tbe interest on tbe public debt which amounted to about 105,000.000, an increase of about $2.500,000 ow the p.cceeding jear. This temporary increase was due to the succesbful refunding operations of Secretary Sherman, by wnich all the matured 6 per cent, bonds were refunded at 4 per cent The value of Secretary Sherman's refunding operations will be -more fully appreciated at the close of tbe present fiscal year, when Its results will be made Uilly apparent for tbe first lime, and when the expenditures in the column of interest on the publlcdebt will drop from $100,000.000 per annum to $84, 000.000. Tbe Republican party may go before the country boastfully on this splendid showing, and Secretary Sherman may justly take pride in it. Tbe meanness of Democratic tac tics has been illustrated in the reports seat here from Maine, impeaching the character, as a soldier, of Daniel F. Davis, the Republican candi didate for Governor there. The assault was so bare faced a fraud and falsehood that Democrats and Greenbackers who served with Mr. Davis in tbe army haye publicly vindicated him. The desperation of the Democratic course is illustrated in these things, which confirm the belief that the Democratic-Greenback conglomeration is hopeless of success except through lying and deception aince the miserable failure of tbe extra session. In accordance with the unanimous desires expressed by Senators on both sides of the Chamber, Captain Isuac Hassett, the veteran doorkeeper of the Uuited States Senate, has been retained in that position. He was flrst appointed page in 1831 when 1'2 years of age, through the influence of the distinguished Senator from Massachusetts, Daniel Webster, and has served continually in various positions in. tne Senate Chamber to the present time a period of fortyeight years. Captain Bassett la now preparing a work which he designs publishing two years hence, on the completion of bis half century of service, containing sketches, reminiscences, and incidents of tbe members of the Senate during that long period of time, eaabracing some of the most eventful epochs known in its hiatory. There is probably no man now living at tbe National Capital who has as distinct and vivid recollections of the memmbers of that illustrous body during tbe flrst bait of tbe period mentioned as be ( mbracing among its number Webster, Clay. Calhoun, Benton, Wright. Hague, Grundy, White, Marc), Ewing, Clayton, King, Tazewell and Tyler of Va., Bell, Pierce and Woodberry, of Vew Hampshire; Holmes, Sprague and Evans, of Maine, names that have added lustre and fame to the distinguished body of which they wore enembera, and will long fill a wide space in tbe political annals of the couutry.
