CITY AND COUNT.
A lijht shower of rain yesterday dl'J much good, but more is needed. E W. Helm is lying dangerously ill with dropsy at his residence in west Plymouth. We are going to have a new j lil. SdC adTertUement for proposals to build in another column. The weather during the last week has been hot enough for August, and farmers are busy planting corn. The special election for council man in the first ward, will be held two weeks from next Tuesday. Mrs. Stevens, wife of James Stevens, of this city, U suff ring much from a virulent cancer 011 her Hp. The boya now have a minnow reservoir at Thayer's fountain, from which fisherman are supplied with bait. The Bhedd Si.ters left Tueuday morning for Hobart. Cal. Sin Dinger, we understand goes with them as manager. We will send the REprBLicis from now until the first of January and the Cinciaaati Weekly Tim s, one j ar, for two dollars. M. W. D jwney has returned from kU western trip, and talks about removing to Missouri and engaging in the lumber trade. Willi im Holland, Mirshall coun ty's celebrated nurseryman, is m iking many valu ble Improvements at his nursery, near Pretty lake, two miles west of Plymouth. We see from our exchanges that noarly all the principal towns and cities are muklng arrangements to observe D oration day. Ii Plymouth going to do so too? Mr. Dial thinks that John Bell will go to bed earlier aud be bstti r qualified for business in the days to come; the cause of his keepiog late hours no longer remaining in Plymouth. T jbn O'Brien. P.. F. W. & C. tele graph operator at S uth Chicago, came home Saturday niUt and went back Sunday night. J hn Is always sure of a cordial greeting in Plymouth. W. J. Col flesh, the sprinkler man, has better lick raising stock and d )gs to id anybody ehe. If you don't b 3 ijve it cill and see his cow with tvin calve?, and a stable full of Newfoundland pupa. Howard Brooke, of the Republican, left T tesday morning for Barber county, K insas. to look after a quarter section of land and some other property he has there. Ho will return in a short time. The types last week made Pi., rnob's daughter say "take this child and curs it for ma," iustead of "take this child and nurse it for me." See head of educational column in last weok'o Rkpcblicax. Officer Cusbman arrested Freedi Prater, Saturday for threatening t shoot two young ladies. She was taken before Esq. Moore, an J not being able to ' give security, cow languishes at Hotel LVAstley. McKelvy will trad- for almost anything. He this week traded eighty acres of land in Gorman township for two sets of harness, four chairs and a second hand safe that bad been through a small fire. A high toned chap named Chess man, was arrested at Walnut a few days since by deputy S.'ienff Armstrong, and lodged iu j ill over night. The next day Sheriff Astley started with him to Wlncheeter. The charge against him was basterdy. Three horses were killed on the track of the I., P. & C. railway, mooday night near Tyner City, by the ex
press train S juth. Oae of the horses was so wedged under and in the wheels of the locomotive that it took some time to extricate them. We have received a copy of the Peru Herald, the paper which takes the place of the Democrat in that city. It is a six column quarto, claiming to be independent in poli hs, and Is a spicy, uewsy sheet. We believe Daniels will make it a success. Machine-cut hair is all the rage among the bjy in Plymouth, but Dan Nussbaum determine! to beat them all, and after gettiag his hair cut as close as possible, had his head lathered and shaved as smooth as HolUendorffs best raz3r in skillful hands could accomplish the jib. Tis Chicago papers are com plaining because they have do street sprinklers in that city. Perhaps they would better move the city down to Plymouth, where from early morn to dewy eve, men with bran new spriuk lers do not ailow a speck of dust to be seen, even though tby must work without money and without price. Joseph Westervelt recently bought at Chicago a large sail boat, which was brought to this place repaired and painted up in fine style. It was takea to Mazenkuckee last Friday and launched near Marmont. It weighs thirty-tbree hundred pounds, and is capable of sustaining the weight of forty persjus. It is by far ths largest boat ever brought to the county. A counterfeit $5 bill on the First National Bink of Tamiq 1a. Pa., is circulating is this county and men should be on the look out for it. There are two ways by which it .can be detected. The word "owing" on the back of the bill, between the words demand an 1 UuiceJ States, is spelled "ownig," and the-Charter No. 1219, found on the genuine, is not on the counterfeit.
William Beck, a disciple of Faust, j
and several years since a resident of Plymoutfi, was with his family vuitiug old friends in this city the latter part of last week and Sunday and Monday of this week. During the last four years Mr. Beck has been employed in the Logansport Journal office. He is a steady and reliable printer, and such men are always needed. M. W. Simons the gentlemanly agent at the F., F. W. A C. depot, has been supplied with a splendid new ticket case which holds tickets for three hundred railway points. H now sells through coupon tickets to all points west with transfer checks, so tha it costs you nothing for the transfer of yourself or baggage from one depot to another at any of the principal cities. ThU supplies a long needed" w;int in Plymouth, one which tba traveling public can appreciate. It has been stated that no liquor was sold on the P., F. W. & C. railroad between Hanna Station ami Plymouth, but we understand that a fellow named Mmroe declares that three towns in a row Hamlet, Grovertown ana Djnelson without a saloon is a disgrace to that secU ju of the country, and he has applied for licenfro to establish a saloon at Grovertown. We hope the Commissioners cf Starke ciunty will conclude that bis saloon would be a disgrace, and refuse him license. Some of the prisoners in the county j iil concluded to try their skill at breaking o it Tuesday morn ing, aud succeeded in tearing a bed stead to pieces with which they pried out one of the windows, when th-y were discover d by deputy Sheriff Armstrong, wto lacked Shelby Lsland and two others of the lea lurs in the strongest cell until they could learn to do better. After writing the above we learn that the prisoners had made a saw out of a j ick knife and been at work at the windows several days previous to the attempt to escape, and bad it In a condition to be easily taken out. After Armstrong locked Leland, Suow and Soules in what be considered the strongest sell iu the rickety old j til, they determined tocomeout of it, and with a bsf of Ir n that they had wrenched off of the cell door, and a piess of two by four inch scantling they commenced to pry the door of the cell off the hinges. Sheriff Atttej being away and D puty Sheriff Armstrong being busy at office work, they thought that they would probably escape, but Mr. Arm strong fluding that something was wrong, placed officer Miner in the hail and told him to k rp the prison era iu the cell, but in less than an hour they pried the djjr off in spite of all that Milner could do to prevent them, a dhe was only able to preveut them from coming out by presenting his revolver and telling them that he woul I shoot tbo first man that cross ed the threshold; knowing that he would do so, they desisted until Mr. Armstrong came to Lis assistance The prisoners were then searched and everything that could be of auy use to them in attempt to get out of the cell was taken from them, an I all Is now quiet. The commissioners were in session, and being convinced that the old j til would not hold prisoners if they were determined to get out, at oace occluded to advertise the contract for building a new one. Proceedings of City Council. The new City Council met Monday evening, Mayor Jones presiding. There were present councilmen Dickinson, Linkenbelt, Soice, Mayer aad Casler. The minutes of the last meeting were read und approved. The Bond of Spencer A. Hoglan as M irsbal, was read and approved.
