The Reaaissanca. How many young folk or old folk either for that matterwhen they meet with the word Renaissance in their reading know exactly what it mean ? They have a vague idea, probably, that it refers to something "artistic," or "old time-y;" perhaps even the pretty head dress of Anne Boleyn, or Mieaael Angelo's battered face, rises dimly before them, or perhaps some queer highLacked piece of furniture; but that in About all they really know about it. Is it not so? The Renaissance is a term gen r&ily applied to the period of titns am braced in the latter part of the fifteenth century, and the first quarter of the sixteenth.; or, to be quite definite, from the fall of the Greek or Byzantine empire in 1453 to the sacking of Rome in 1527. But it may. 'with propriety, be made to apply to the time extending from ti e beginning of tbs fourteenth century to the middle of the sixteenth. The word ""Renaissance" means a new birth. Another form of the word, "Renascence," lately used by aone English writers, shows more clearly its Latin origin. During the long night of the Middle Ages ignorance and superstition had lain like an iron weight upon the human mind ; but now some mighty forces seemed to bi at work, and there was a great awakening in every direction. Gunpowder, which came into use about the middle of the fourteenth century, caused a great change in the Art of carrying on ir, and put an nd forever to tu feudal system, which was one distinguishing characteristic of the Middle Ages. Then there was the invention of the compass in 1302 by Flavio Gioja, a native of Amalfl, a village near Naples. By this it was made possible for sailors to venture further out to sea, and it eventually led to the discoveries in America and the East Indies. The account of these brilliant achievements reads almost like a page from a fairy-tale. The Portuguese were the foremost ja all the grand maritime enterprises of the latter part of the fifteenth Century. They discovered the Madeira Islands, the Azors, the Cape Terd Islands, and points on the western coast of Africa, ft was in the service of the Portuguese king that the bravo Barthelemew Dias discovered foe southern point of Africa; Mild afterward, in 1497, that Vasco di Oama first rounded (his cape, which proved, indeed, to be one of Good Hope, for it was from here that he sailed to discover the eastern sea route to that land of silks and spices, of gold and diamonds, the East Jodie-. Tou all know that these bold exploits of the Portuguese navigators tired the heart ot Columbus with dariog to set suit en an unknown sea in order to find a westward passage to the Indies. But his story is so well known to you ail that I need make no more than this passing allusion to him. Not only were tbera great discoveries made on this lower wo; id of our?, but more marvelous revela tions still were made in the realm above. It had long been believed that "this little round 0' the earth" was the center of all created things; tout Copernicus proved, a short time before his death, in 1543, that the sun was the center of the solar system. He was aided in his studies by the description of the telescope, which JRoger Bacon had written in 1250. It is supposed that some of these inventions were known at a much earlier dato In Asia. The telescope and gunpowder were known to the Arabians, and from them, no doubt, had Friar Bacon derived his knowledge. It is certain, too, that the compass in some rude shape was known to the Chinese in very early times. They attiibu ted the invention to Hong ti, grandson of Noah, 1115 B. c. But still we have to speak of the most wonderful invention which, more than any other, helped on the progress of the Renaissance. the noble art of printing. The Dutch claim it for their countryman, Laurence Köster of Haarlem, while it is generally agreed that Guttenburg of Mayence rightfully divides it with his associates, Faust and ßchaeffer. It was the last named who hi ought metal types into use about the year 1452. After the fall of the Greek empire In 1453, numbers of Oreek scholars left their homes in the imperial city of Constantino, where the barbarous Turks had established themselves They carried with them all their worldly wealth, their precious manuscripts concealed under the folds of their robes. The poor exiles found a warm welcome and a congenial home in Italy, where a taste for classical literature had lately been awakened. We cannot help thinking how Petrarch, who had died three-quarters of a century before, would have enjoyed the society of these learned Greek i, he who had loved learning so intensely, and had done so much to cultivate a taste for it in others. He died as he had lived, among his books, for he was found dead with his head resting upon an open volume. Now every one seemed smitten with a passionate desire for learning, and eagerly embraced the opportuniy of profiting by the instruction of these "wise men from the east." Princess ladies and courtiers were Alike enthusiastic Like a boy with
a new toy, they were filled with delight over somo r.ewly discovered fragment of an old Greek or Latin author. Now the lately invented art of printing came into requisition. Paper had been made from rags since about the yeur 1300, and, with
these new facilties, copies of the classic authors were rapidly multiplied and came Into the possession of those who hnd never dared to hope to own one. Aldus Manutius set up a priuting-prcss in Venice in 1488, and sent forth edition aftor edition of those pplendid classies, called, after him, the Aldlne edditions, which aro to this day the delight and envy of all lovers of rare and costly books It was not long before the results of this revival of learning were plainly to be seen. New ways of thinking had come into fashion ; a more correct and refined taste had beguu to prevail, and thus was effected a complete revolution in tho arts of painting, sculpture and architecture. The new learning was called the "Humanities," and those who cultivated It were called "Humanists;" and rightly, too; for the new learning worked a reform in morals, and so a refinement of manners. The Greek stu lies of the Humanists led to the transl .lion of the Bible into many of the modern languages, and a purer and more enlightened Christianity was the result. And so, this movement, the Renaissance, went on. New ideas of religion, new ideas of politics, and of government came into being, and prepared the way for what is called the Modern Epoch. All this is best and sweetest and noblest; all that is most worth having in the life of the present day we owe to It, the "new birth" that came in the fifteenth century. Mary Lloyd in St. Nicholas for March. Went of Thought. When we thing most for others. God things most of us. The best way for a man to get out of a 1 wly position Is to be conspicuously effective in it. Help somebody worse off than yourself and you will find that you are better off than you fancied. As in nature, as in art, so In grace; as well as stones their luster. The more the diamond Is cut the brighter it sparkles; and in what seems bard dealing, there 'God has no end in view but to perfect his people. (iutrie. Hope is the ruddy morning ray of joy, recollection is its golden tinge; but the latter is wont to sink amid the dewb and dusky shades of twilight, and the bright blue day which the former promises breaks indeed, but in another world and with another sun. liic liter. As the sun does not wait for prayers and incantations that he may rise, but shines at once, and is greeted by all, so neither wait for applause and shouts and eulogies that thou mayest do well; thou shalt be beloved like the sun. Dr. Crane, finding a flower under the Humboldt glacier, was more affected by it because ic grew beneath the lip and cöld bosom of the ice, then he would have been by the most gorgeous gardon bloom. So some single struggling grace in the heart of one far removed from Diviao Infi uencee may be dearer to God than a whole catalogue of virtues in the life of one more favored of Heaven. Pleasure is a shadow, wealth is vanity, and power a pageant; but knowledge is ecstatic in enjoyment, perennial in fame, uulimited in space, and infinite in duration. In the performance of its sacred offices, it fears no danger, spares no expense ; it looks in the volcano, dives in the ocean, perforates the earth, wings it. flight in the skies, explores sea and land, contemplates the distance, examines the minute, comprehends the great, ascends to the sublime; no place is too remote for its grasp, no height too exalted for its reach. When the summer days of youth is slowly wasting away into the nightfall of age, and the shadows of the past year grow deeper and deeper as life wears to a close; It is pleasant, to look back through the vistas of time time upon the joys and sorrows of early years. If we have a home to shelter, or hearts to reioiee with us and friends who have been gathering around our fireside, then the rough places of our wayfaring will be worn and smoothed away in the twilight of life, while the bright sunny spots we have passed tbrougii will grow brighter and more beautiful. Happy, indeed, are those whose intercourse with the world baa not changed the course of their holier feeling, or broken those musical chords of the heart whose vibrations are so melodious so tender and so touohing in the evening of age. Labor and Capital. There is a great deal of tom-foolery extant in the w orld about the relations of eapital and labor. A Boston workingman, whose eyes are clearly opened to the facts of the case, offers a toast that covers tbe whole ground. Be says: "Capital without labor is like faith without works dead. Labor without cupital is like works without faith valueless." In the nature of things there is perfect harmony between them, and seltlshness alone suggests any antagonism. Let capital beware lest it alienates labor. Let labor beware lest it cripple capital. Let capital say to labor, "Lend me thine hands;" and let labor reply, "I will, but let me hold one of the strings of thy purse." Parents, mothers, nurses, do not fail to give Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup to the little ones for all cases of cough or colds. Costs only 25 cents.
Pastime. Lawyers are never more earnest than when they work with a will, that is, if the estate is valuable. When a girl gets mad und rises from a fellows knee, but thinks better of it and goes baok again, that's what they call a relapse. A Creston man had to havo both his feet frozen and amputated before ho would join the red ribbon club. There are some men who won't quit drinking whisky until you amputate their necks. Hawkeye. Bishop Simpson, confesses that he u a 1 to bo so timid that he would walk around the square to avoid meeting a young lady. That's nothing unusual when it isn't the right young lady. Exchange. An agricultural paper tells "How to Dress a Hog." We know how to dress a hog. Give him a can,i, a stove- pipe hat and a pair of eye-glasses. After that he will try to pass for a man. But, pshaw! a hog will be a hog. no matter how ho may be dressed. The following anecdote was told by an American preacher for a fact: He was praying, and in his prayer ho said. "I pray that the power oi tho devil may be curtailed." Just then an old darky in the congregation cried out. "Yes; amen! Bless me! Cut him tail right smack, smoove off." A little boy whose father was a rather immoderate drinker of the moderate kind one day sprained his wrist, and his mother utilized the whisky in her husband, bottle to bathe the little fellow's wrist After a while the pain began to abate, and the child surprised bis mother by exclaimimr: "Ma has pa got a sprained throat?" Mary bad little chill W hich pave her http of pain, And when he tried to shake that chill It sheok her back again It followed her to school one day, Which was agaiust tht rule; It made the children Un?h to see Poor Mary hake In aebool. An Infallible and never-failing recipe for the cure of diphtheria is simply to put a teaspoonful of sulphur into a wine-glass of water, and stir it with the finger instead of a spoon, as tne sulphur does not readily amalgamate with water. When the sulphur Is well mixed then it is to be given to the patient to gargle, and, after gargling, to swallow it, and the patient will be out of danger in tea minutes. When the fungus is too nearly dosing to ahow gargling, the sulphur in that case should be blown through a quill into the throat, and, after the fungus has shrunk to allow of it, then the gargling. If a patient cannot gargle, take a live coal, put it on a shovel, andspriuklea spoonful of flour of brimstone upon it; let the sufferer inhule it by holding the head over it. and the fungus will die. Brimstone kills every species of fungus in man, beast, and plant in a few minutes. A few days ago, at Princess Mary'.; Cottage Homes, London, an outbibak of diptherla attacked fifty of the inmates, but one of the lady nurses cured them all by causing the patients to gargle with sulphur and swallow the gargle. Pushing Advertising Too Far. "Bless my soul!" said Col. Crawford last Sunday morning, "this is too bad! Here's Bull's cough syrup in the Bible!" The Colonel took off his specs, rubbed them carefully and looked again. " Tes! here in the 23d chapter of Isaiah. 15th verse 'Over 500,000 bottles of Dr. Bull's cough syrup, &c.' Well, I thought that Bull got everywhere else except in the Bible. Now I'll give it up; it must be a good thing." Mrs. C. came in and explained that she had cut the slip out of a newspaper and put it in her Bible for safe keeping and it had stuck to the leaf. So the Colonel was satisfied. Staunton ( Fa.) The bridegroom said it was contrary to Chinese propriety for a husband to kiss his wife before folks, but if the Justice would exolude the Chinese spectators he would obey the law in the presence of the Americans, whom he regarded as of no account. His suggestion was followed, and he kissed his wife.
Important to Farmers. When Brindle, or Bess, or Spot, shows the slightest signs of sickness, do you not take immediate measures to relieve her? So, too, when Biiiy and Kit, your favorite colts, betray symptoms of disease, you search the "Farrier" for the indicated nialadj and its remedy, or it may be you summon the nearest veterioary surgeon. All very wise and prudent this! But is not that ailing son or daughter far dearer to you than all the horses and cattle in your stables? Tet for waeks, it may be months, or even a year, he or she has complained of sense of languor, or drowsiness, and debility with occasional headache the sure forerunners of disease. Or it may be the face, once bloomiag with tbe hues that only health and the pure, invigoruting country air can give, has become pallid, and the eyes unnaturally bright. You may have noticed the slight dry cough ut early morning and night and have attributed it to a eold. Do not delay to secure the proper means for relief.
