CITY AND COUNTT, George MornlngBtar, of Walnut, has returned to Columbua, Olio. The Temple of Honor of this city will give a grand supper at their Hall Saturday night. Bumor .ays that E. Wheeler and D. E. Snyder will form a copartnership fur the purpose of buying aid shipping grain. For thirty days we will give the New York Weekly Atlas, a fort j -eight column paper, and the Republican one year for $2.40. John Williamson, who has been for sometime connected with the dry goods establishment of Richard Williamson in this city, returned to Now York Saturday. Don't fail to attend the lecture at Centennial Hall, Saturday evening. Father Toohey is worth listening too, and the proceeds go to help St. Michael's Academy. The Plymouth Good Templar dramatic troupe, accompanied by the silver cornet band, visited Bourbon Saturday, and rendered the drama "Rum or the Frst Glass" to a crowded house.

Look out for an original story in next week's Republican, and read the poem in this number written for us by "Lulu." Miss Alice Webber, of Chicago, has been iu this city a few days canvassiüg for "Bryant's Library of Poetry and Song." It is a magnificent book. John Jacoby leaves for Nebraska Monday, to help improve an eighty acre lot that he bought last fall. He will probably be gone a couple of months. J. H. Bennett, of the firm of Tribby & Bennett, left on the noon train, Tuesday, for Greeuflehl, Ohio, to see his sist r, who is so tick as not to be expected to live. For the benefit of our readers in British America, California and other distant places, we state that a heavy snow storm prevailed in tt.is section or country yesterday. Our thanks are due Dr. Cjnfer for the valuable letters he is sending as from Indianapolis. His description of our State Cbaritable institutions should be read by all. Oysters and cold supper at old Blue Ribbon Hall, Saturday evening Feb. 22d. Proceeds for the benefit of the Temple of Honor. Everybody iavited. The M. OL Guards will attend in full uniform. One of our subscribers at Tynr City sent us a postal card Tuesday which read as follows: "Don't shoot. 1 will surrender, will be fn Plymouth sooa and make till rigb don't stop the paper." Miss Sophia Wile left this city Sunday evening for New York. During her ten months residence in Plymouth she formed a large circle of friends by whom she will be very much missed. Simon Myer.-, one of the old time subscribers of the Republican came in last week and spent a short time in talking about the past and present. It is to the old standbys like him tnat

He was called to this city by the death of his sister, Mrs. Metcalf. Mr. Nichols has been for several years employed on the Indianapolis Journal. Siuce he left the Republican it haa changed hands many times, but has never failed, wo believe to make its weekly visit to its readers; and we are glad to know Mr. Nichols, like the Repcbli can, U now prosperiug. we in great measure owe our success. 1 from this city, two strauge mcu made

F. A. McMaaters has opened a new store at Walnut, and shows his good judgment by enrolling for the Republican. Our friends and enemies too, if we have any, wi.l find McMasters just the kind of a man they want to trade with. H. Corbie & Co , last Saturday sold tickets over the old reliable Wabaah road to Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado, to the amount of $430. They are agents for Union Pacific lands iu southern Nebraska for MarsLail and Kosciusko counties. A young lady about 18 years of age, daughter of Goorgs Buico, is said to hnve left hone rather mysteriously last Friday night, but we understand that she la iu the city and claims to be abln to give a satisfactory explanation of the matter. R. J. Gatee, who recently removed to this couutry from Ohio, .ubecribed for the Rkpcblicas and pays in advance. He will make a good citiien and will vote the Republican ticket, as we hope many of our wayward Democratic friends will, at the next election.

We were pleased this week to make the acquaintance of Mr. Gunkle, formerly of Dayton, Ohio, who in now in the law office with John S. Bender, Esq. Mr. Gunkle' is a pleasant, in teiligent young man, and webclievoanother good citizeu has been added to Plymouth's population. Equinox, of Inwood, informs us that Miss Belle Singleton is very sick with bilious fever; an infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Adams, died of lung fever Feb. 15; and a couple of wagon loads of In wood's temperance workers organized a union at Mt, Olive Church, last Fiiday night. 8. D. Taber, one of Plymouth's most popular grocery men, J. W.

Daria of Bourbon, Robert Barnhill of Argos, Peter Tye of Polk, W. Y. Stereoton of Center, 8. L. Carney of LaPaz, John VanKirk or West, and Hugh Brownie of Plymouth, are among the the citizens of this county good and true who have renewed for the Republican this week. The paper which a few weeks since declared that the "Nationals were born in fraud and are held together by bribery" declares in its last issue that it is the ofllcial "organ of the National Greenback party of the thirteenth Congressional dictrict," and in another paragraph in the same column tells its readers that the "Nationals are in cahoot with the Democratic party." A large number of the intimate friends of Rev. J. B. Henry paid their respects to him, at the residence of Mrs. Yockey, last Friday evening, by a most pleasant and agreeable surprise. He was presented with a few very useful and kind remembrances, during the evening, which was passed most enjoyably by all present. Mr. Henry desires to return hU tiucere thanks to all participating. James Lilley, of Bourbon, United States mail agent on the P. F. W. & OL rail way slopped off at Plymouth last Thursday morniog, and took occasion to give the Republican office a pleasaat call and substantial en-

their appearance. Oue seized his

horse by the bridle, and the othr seized him by the clothing attempting to drag him from the horse, not succeeding in th'u, the ruftl-in struck him with a knife, cutting through his clothing aud graziug the skiu. Mr.

Hoham succeeded in uukiug his escape, leaving the cuff of bis heavy ulster overcoat in the bands of the ruffian, it having been torn entirely off in the struggle. Neither of the men spoke a word, and no clue can be found as to who they were; but their obiect must have been robbery. Our Senator explained Monday to his bretheia of the Seuate why be felt called upon to uttvr language when discussiug tho drainage bill that several newspapers had characterized as profane. After telling them that be was not in the habit of using profane tanyuaye in bis speeches, he buiJ he made use of this language: "Damn such legislation, and the oants of the men or persons who first aiteinp ed to inject it into the laws of this state ought to be damned to in.'.-rnul infamy." Ho borrowed this from the great Master himself using the words "damn such legislation'' in a legitimate sense; that it should be condemned beyond all

1 possibility of forgiveness; lost beyond

the power of of being found ; put jut of sight beyond all possibility of recovery; just as tho Master himself says, "he who believeth not on me shall be damned." It was the farthest thought from him to express the least irreverent idea, or to utter ihe least possible profanity." Of course no reader of the Jiepubliran will think for a moment that Senator Reeve intended to use profane language.

Walnnt still alive. One firm on the decline. Hoop shavers on the strike last week. School for four weeks yet. Mr. James Cochran, of Surumersct, Ind.. it visiting here.

Mr. J W. White, of Licrrni-c county, in viriting his Mster, Mrs. Snow. Mr. John Ii!mp9, who removed from here to Chirinda, Iowa, has returned and gone 10 blackftnilhlng here. We noticed Dr. Wooley, of Warsaw, on

1 our streets. He has been visiting bis sun

in this vicinity. Miss Jennie Snow and mother, are visiting friends at Rochester. Miinrod McPaul is going to Tiptown May success follow him. J jmes Heppcto intends leaving us.to act as agent of Mannin fc Co., iu the pur chase of timber. We are sorry U see one of our best cili.ens and most earnest workers depart. We hope his brightest anticipations may be realized. F. A. McMaslers, of Inwood, haa brought a nice stock of goods to this place and is doing well, as he has no com petition now. Messrs llep;eto and Morning-tar, the former merchants of this place, have had their st Hi closed by the Sheriff This is rather bad for the boys, and shows what the credit business will do. Syl BeaU, ol Plymouth, has control of the old stop; and goods. HO I KHO ASH BRENKS WOODS. ur woous BOY.

The Greenbackers hare reorganized their club at this pi ace. Charley Murray was elected President. It is reported that L M, Smith will move to Inwood. The blue ribbon boys are raising money to purchase an organ. John Plake is going to emigrate to Kansas, to "grow up with the country." Dr. Simpson reports several new cases of lung fever. The Dr. is kept busy almost day and night. It is estimated that only about one third ol the fanners ol this township take a Mtrspaper. In this day of cheap newspa past, this is indeed startling. How parents can exeet to hriugup their children to hj useful members of society without furnishing them good pners and books to read, is tast our comprehension. 50RTH T0WSSH1P. SCAPE OOAT. Mr. Fluckey is very sick with consumption. A child of Marion and Sarah dimming is very sick. Carl White had a narrow escape from being killed last Sumkiy. While playing on the ice he fell striking his hend on a pole, how long he was itscusiblc he cannot tell. Our trustee was called upon last f eck to decide who mas running one of our schools. He decided in favor of a young ire ntleman nrtined Whipple, and sent two large boys home for an iuUetiuite iwriod. Many of our citizens received Valentines last Fiiday and Siturday. It caused a great deal ol merriment from some and a great deal of profanity from others. We are informed that one uight recent ly a man thai does not love his neighbor as himself weut to hi neighbor's house aud was caught in the act of trying to take something that did not belong to him , but all lue neighbor lost was a gill of beans and a drachm of powder that lay be hind the beans. Jstnes Swihurt is the jolllest mau in the township, but for s lew davs past he seems to be absent minded. If you ask him who discovered America, he will say "aboN. Who was chief commander of the union army ? "A boy." Who Is the governor of Indiana? "'A boy." He has a boy at hit house (our days old, but he can t m tke us believe that buys have al ways run the government. The Rkpcumcan is eagerly sought and read; those who are not subscribers bor row it from their neighbors.

Mr. Kaufman saj's his brother was chopping a tree off that hud been blown out by the roots, and when chopped off, the stump returned to its original positiou with such force as to throw him into the cavity, where the roots of the tree struck him aud broke his hack. Wc thank Mr. "Sann Ooat" for his corn receipt. As for tight boots, we neglected ordering o:ir boots last fall until the weather was go bad that the shoemaker could nol work oul ol" doors, so we were obliged to purchase the largest pair we could find in Phmoulh, and they did pinch our toes a little too much As to religion, we have tried to keep the precepts from cur youth up; and as to reading the county paper without iMiying for it, oh, my ! we could not think of committing Mich a sin. The joint institute between West and Union townships was one of the best ever held in Ikis township. The Union town ship teachers are wide awake and under stand their business, as is evinced by the way they handled the differeut subjects.
