Richard Humphrey, who was in jail here about six months, and was afterward sentenced to the penitentiary for horse stealing, has been granted a new trial by the Supreme Court, after serving fourteon months of his sentence. Services at St. Thomas' church on Sunday next as follows: Morning prayer and litany at 9 a. m.; ßermon and holy communion at 10:30; evening prayer at 7 p. ra. A tempernnce sermon will be delivered in the evening. John Henry, the man that wen through J. S. Bender's house, and af terward tried to burn the jail, is confined in the jiil at LaPorte, and will not be tried until next term of court. Humphreys, who was grauted a Dew trial by the Supreme Court, is in jail here, and cannot be tried again until next term. The Plymouth Republican gets better with every issue. There is nothing like making an editor feel happy and have the means wherewith to meet every obligation, then he can devote bis attention to the wants of his readers and make them a first-class paper. Stark County Enterprise. Senator Reeve, of Plymouth, introduced a bill which provides that no offiVlal shall be pecuniarily interested in any contract or work done for the State. This is a direct stroke at Governor Williams' cattle transactions, and the bill is spoken of as "an act to prevent sales of steers by Blue Jeans." Gos. hen Times. Harlan & Late, builders, of Indianapolis, brought suit against 0. W. Babcoek to r cover au account they claimed due and to enforce a mechanics Men on the building occupied by Buck & Toan. The case dieted considerable interest, and was this week decided by the Circuit Court in favor of the pluiutiffi. Judgment, $314 45 and ct sts. No clue to the whereabouts of Charles Flory has yet been obtained. A story was circuited in some parts of the county that Flory was in Canada and had sent a telegram to the sheriff boasting of his escape. Every one should know that such ltltMMtl are fa'.-ie, as only a fool would telegraph to an ofO jer who was seeking him, the place where he could be found. The Superintendent of the Indiana Soldiers' Orphans' Home, Knightstown, Ind., says: "If there are any children in your county whose fathei's were in the late war and have since died, who are destitute and need homes, we can admit three or four. We prefer orphans, the law makes no provision for those whoso fathers are living."
Hod. H. G, Thayer has the nicest, best arranged and finest office in Plymouth, but Hon. A. L. Wheeler is now Atting up an office in the bank building which will, probably, in some respects, surpass Mr. Thayer's. The floor of Mr. Wheeler's office will be laid in diamouds of black walnut and ash, and altogether fitted up in a style equal to any private office in northern Indiana. The Hon. Charles H. Reeve, the 8enator from the Plymouth district, ha been covered with glory by the

lands, fees and salaries and phraseology, arrangement, enrollment of bills and unfinished business, &c. Such honors ought to make him Governor. Valparaiso Messenger. "Job Flint," (C. F. Green) the humorist, did not leave Plymouth in the beat humor imaginable. Only fourteen persons attended bis lectuie Friday night, and ten of those bad complimentary tickets. From those who were there we learn that the lec turo was better than many others that have been well patronized. lie struck Plymouth at the wrong time. The Agnes Wallace combination and the drama presented by the Good Templars having occupied almost the week previous, and a temperance lecture free to all on the same evening, left no room for Mr. Green. A gasoline heater in Singler Si Eich's tin shop exploded Monday moroing, almost causing serious re-
i suits. Johu Wright discovered a leakage, and was trying to stop it j when the flame burst out at the top.
He immediately placed bis hand over the cap with the hope of smotheriug the flame, but the heat compelled him to remove it almost instantly, badly burned. The flames then burst out, the burning oil spreading almost over the room. Prompt work on the part of the hands, however, subdued the fro and prevented any damage of consequence. Gasoline is in our opinion always dangero is, and the utmost caution is required of those who use it.

It Is rumored that John W.Thomas will probably buy the Mueller property near Shoemaker's mill, remove the old buildings and erect on the site one of the finest brick mills ia this part of the State. Tribbey & Bennett are now furnishing their customers bee from tall fed cattle, and we speak what we know when we say that better beef cannot be bought In this or any other city than they sell. We have been crowded with job work during the last ten days, but are now prepared to turn out work as rapidly as our patrons desire. The Republican office is the place to get the best work at reasonable prices. Our column of personal mention of paying subscribers is crowded out this week. Quite a number of new subscribers have enrolled and several old ones renewed; all have our thanks and we shall find room for the names at least, next week. Mr. and Mrs. Vinson Brownlee, residing near Maxinkuckee celebrated their golden wedding yesterday. Fifty years of married life seems a long time to the young, but to Mi. and Mrs. Brownlee, looking back over the past, the time no doubt seems short. The comments of some newspapers in this vicinity, relative to the burning of the Tippecanoetown wool en mills, seems to bo upon a money basis, having the "wrong pig by the ear. The man Bates, to whom the eredit of detecting Flora is given by these papers, is not entitled to any sympatl y, except it bo from friends of Flora. Those wh j know best believe that if not as guilty as Flora in the eye of the law, he is in full accord aud sympathy with him. The eredit belongs to a memb t of the Chicago police. "Rum; or, the First Glass," was the drama presented by members of the I. O. O. T. to large and ppreci;itive audiences last Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Had this drama be n presented by professionals claiming to bo "stars," it would not, perhaps, have received many encomiums, but presented by an amateur home troupe, it surpassed expectation. There was much to con: mend, an I in some respects it was superior to the plays usually presented by professionals. The drama was not what it ought to have been to begin with. Mr. Milroy was induced to tuke the lirst glas far too easily for a good temperance man, and then were other points of which we now have-not time to sp- ak which the aetors could not remedy. But there were some things added to the original plan of the drama, which made it fur more entertaining than it could have been otherwise. The song between acts which were arranged by the committee, were, wo have no doubt, appreciated by all. Among the points to commeud was the perfection with which all bad committed to memory the parts assigned them. The management also was perfect, and the time between scenes less than usual, even with professionals. Everything moved right along, the audience was never allowed to become imptrtient waiting for the curtain to rise. This of itself would cover a multitude of faults. But where were the faults? some one ak. The faults were iu
the acting; whilo many did well, there wasmucbthat was not true to nature. s will always be thj case, when a troupe is formed from persons who are inexperienced, some were assigned parts to which they were not adapted, and whilo they talked distinctly, it was plain to be seeu they were only trying to act a part. They could not forget tl mselves and make the feelings and emotion of an Individual, placed in the position in which the real actors of such a drama would be placed, their own. We shall not partkulaiize now. Thero weie many who did well, exceedingly well, considering the time that they had for preparation, aud the fact that there was no trained elocutionist cr actor among them to teach them. If the same persons should again pre
sent a drama, we have no doubt it would be much better, and wc an say, wi'hout danger of being accused of a desire to flatter or please those who took part in the drama, that it was. taken all together, played better and gave better satisfaction than is givon by one amateur combination in a dozen. The threat applause and the large audieuco which greeted them the second evenin ; id ovidonceof this fact, aud if they should again attempt an entertain ment of the same kind, It will be hailed with delight by the citizens of Plymouth.
