ANSWERS TO (.l'ESTTONS. The invention of tho thermometer is claimed by sereral persons wt about the same time. The best authorities give it to Dribbel, of Aelmaer. In 1609. The reason for xero being place! where it is, instead of the freezing point of water, was bused upon an errr. When Fartrentaeit tested his thermometer it was on the coldest day of the coldest winter ever known in the locality where h live, and be supposed that the point reached by the mercury was the lowest point possible for it to descend that it eould not be any colder and he called that poiat zero. The Church of England became separate from the Romish Church In 1535, during the reign, and by the acts f Henry VIII. Having divorced himself from bis first wifs, in order to ireairy Anne Bolcyn, ho was excommunicated. WheTeupon, with Sir Thomas Cromwell managing Parliament, and Archbishop Cranmer controlling the clergy, he throw off the spiritual authority of tho Pope, and declared himself the head of the Church of Eng!a&(). Monasteries and eonrentfl wt re abolished by him, uui therr Eevenues appropriated to the crown ; and tinder his son Edward VI, the separation was made final and complete, by throwing aside the old Latin service, the ceremonies of nasi, confession, Ac . and introducing the present "Book of Common Prayer." compiled by Cranmer. The entire amount of gold In the world at present is estimated at stven billions (17,000,000.000) of value in the United States coinage. A billion fe such a Wg number that the average mind scarcely takes it iu A thousand million is more readily comprehended; consequently seveu thou sand millions means more, verbally and financially, than seven billions. How much solid gold would that make? Pure gold is more than nine teen times as heavy as water, and a ubio foct of wator weighs 1,000 ounces avoirdupois. A cubic foot of gpoM would weigh, therefore, over 19,900 ounces avoirduri Is, and each such ounce of fine gold is worth, as we reckon, rather more than $18; so that a cublic foot of the previous metal would have a value of about $.133,333. All of it mtgüt be contained In a block some sixteen feet high, twenty eight feet wide, aud tb'ly six feet long.

That Inatitate. Kditor Fejmbliran:--! have J'Jst read the artieie on the reports of the proceedings of tearheis' institutes. If "Pedagogue will go with me to an Institute, where the teachers of some township have assembled to discuss the subjects prepared by some "Committee on Programme," be will know why vr- reports are generally so un interest rag. When he takes a survey of the teachers assembled, and I ear them express their ideas on varinbjects, he will then know tbut a report of the proceedings can not but be dry. He will find tbre some ten er a dozea young men who have "ciphered" through Bay's third book, and have, by some moans or other, procured license to teach ; it may b through tbe Intervention of some influential friend, or by coming in at the eleventh hour, as many did last fall, being licensed to 01 1 up the schools regardless of qualifications. (There are exceptions.) Now listen- to what they bav" to say. Perhaps the first thing on tbe programme is "Compound Numbers." Well, in the name of common sense, lost these teachers understand com pound numbers? If they do, why discuss such a subject in institute? Have we not got Ray, and Stoddard, od Robinson? Then why not take their text books for that, aud dhcuss some subject Dot found iu hem? But the teacher to whom tbe subject has been assigned Takes tbe flooi, coughs a few times, and proceeds to teil what ke knows about the subject, and preelous little it is not even us much as eld Ray. While he occupies the floor, just notice the township Trustee: see how he twists around in his chair aad looks out of first one window and then another, and taking a ehew of tobacco, looks all around him and then spits close to the ttove. Watch the teachers chew their lead pencils, pretending to take notes while they ate only practicing spencerian flourishes on tbe bit of paper before them. Well, the speaker final ly leuves off, to the great relief i f everybody present Now comes a discussion which needs to bo heard to be appreciated. No reporter can report it. Mark Twain never undertook such a task. Some very queer criticisms will be Indulged in, some ideus advanced, and some not-"accordlng-to established usage" language will be used; but tbey are having an institute, and are saving a days wage, which they think tbey would lose by staying away. Tbey are doing the best they can. and "Peda -oguc" has no business to be poking fun at them -ue We are ashamed of ourselves any how. Don't you notice bow sheepish we look when we come to town on Saturday? "Institute to-day?" some brisk feilow asks, aud we say, "Y e s." "Dont get paid for this day's work?" "No yea that Is we save a day's wages." Noble calling! Our profession! I beg your pardon. Mr. Editor; excuse me, I never did such a thing since I've been teaching. But the end is aot yet. I may touch a bit of red tape next time. Jon 8. JUturbon, Indiana.
Simple Lessons in Science. Force is that which sets a body In motion, as, for instance, the police force, which makes a body move. A liquid violently resists all attempt to force it into closo confinement, spreading itself out so as to make its surface level; and many liquid." communicate their peculiarities to those who imbibe them. When anything is weighed iu water, it suffers a h as of weight. This Is especially true in the case of salt. A pound avoirdupois is exactly f quid Ca 7000 grains. Take a pound of sand und count. When t odies becomo heated, movements a little back wards-and-for-wards take place as you must bvo sen yourself in the case of a street Itffct. Boa I causes a copper rot' to bo ex tended, and it bug the same effect upon a policeman's staff. Most physicians teach that noise is the result of a single blow given on the ear: mu-ic of a series of blows bl our own experience, however, we have obserevd that noise was the result in both cases; iu the latter, more unmusical even than the former. Box a small boy's ears, fltst singly, and afterwards repeatedly, and you will soon see, or rather hear. Attraction and affinity are synony nous in chemistry, but in life, we often find tbe greater tho affinity, the less the attraction. Some precious stones are called eatsoyes; diamonds, surely might be called cat's claws, since they scratch everybody. Electricians neatly divide all todies into conductors and uon conduc tors, but in tho world, there are bodies who, although they never mounted tho monkey-board of an omuibus, nevertheless are ca ls.

Religion shoul I sanctify, society ennoble, government regulate, and education enlighten all industrial occupations. Dissipation is a swift and sure destroyer, and every young man who follows It is as the eurly flower, exposed to untimely frost. This life is like a game of cards. We must play thehands dealt to us, and the credit is not as much in winning ns in playing a poor hand well. Let us take example by the post, acting with wisdom, knowledge and reason in the present, by so doing, providing safety iu the future. Life may still be a magnificent experience, as ono of Tennyson's heroines sings: "t pull n.t down nir palace tower that are So lightly, beautifully built; Perchance I may return with others then., When I have purged mjf guilt." This world is a dream within a dream; und as we grow older each step is an awakening. But all farmers know that it Iihs been a paying crop; many have always made it their principal money crop. It is reasonable to think that it may bo so again. Our correspondent, James Itiley, of Boone county, tbe well known Berkshire breeder, has an idea on this subj-ct that is worth the attention of ail Western fartaers.
