The Power of Drei. Tkero are few thiols the influence of wbieh are more absurdly overrattexl than dress. There are persons who seem to think that their well being in this life depends upon their dress; that position, respect and friends will be lost if they are not dressed in the latest and most bewitching style. Hence. 1 ith many, dress becomes the chief end of existence. The care and burden of their life is dress. Wealth, health, and life itself, are sacrificed at the shrine of this idol. With them life is one long "dress parade," and they seem to think if for a bingle hour they were to venture out from the environing walls of fashion they would be likely to bo forever dishonored

The Cultivation of Self Respect. A child that is uniformly treated with courtesy, with consideration, with j istk-t?, will unconsciously deem himself worthy of such treatment, and will become worthy of it, unlesss he is by nature wholly base; and he will unconsciously treat others as be is treated. It is a fearful thing to give a child the lie, to accuse him of steuliog. to accustom him to unexpected and unmerited cuffs and blows. He may have been guilty of an untruth and of theft, he m.iy merit punishment, but the wise parent never will admit into the household vocabulary the terrible words thief and liar, and will never permit in himself or others the hasty blow, the bitter taunt, the stingiDg epithet; the reflned aud educated parent can never toler-ite language such as we have indie ited. bitter words are more cruel than blows, and inflict more lasting injuries. Care in the choice of associates will do much to foster proper self-respect in a child. Some mothers think their sons and daughters can cro

Alas! it is not till time with reckless hand has torn out half the leaves from the book of human life, that man begins to see that he leaves which remain are few in number: and to remember, faintly at first and then more clearly, that upon the early page3 of that book was written a story which he would fain read over again. Good Souse A Philadelphia clergyman, the Rev. Mr. MacLeod, contends that there is neither health, sense, cor religion in full mourning. He tells bis congregation that a bit of black ribbon, worn in ome way, will tell the story of the beravement just as well as a complete mourning suit. Those who cannot themselvei do good services are but as one to a thousand compared with those who can see faults in the labor of others. To put ourselves in a passion, in consequence of the misconduct of others, is unquestionably very weak behavior, but it has also something generous about it: for we are very olearly annoying and punisning ourselves, when the offenders only ought to have been the sufferers. We both read and hear bitter complaints about the uncertainty of human affairs; and yet it is that un certainty alone that gives life its relish, for novelty is the teal and radical cause of all our enjoyment. Under no clrcumstauces, whether
cloak or coat answer the purpose, and a weight of useless expense and a custom that is always gloomy, and in warm weather very uncomfortable, be takeo from the shoulders cf bereaved mourunrs. Christians, be is convinced, ought not to take a gloomy view of death. There are glorious hopes linked with the sorrows, and the hopes oi those who are goue before should be symbolized rather than the sorrows of those who are left behind. He would have eheerful garments worn by the mourners in token of the glorified ones, and a bit of ribbon or crape as a simple memorial of their owu sense of bereavement. The rest of the full mourniug he would send to the heathen, who, iu their sorrow at the grave have no hope. Fat Man Reduced 50 Pounds. Mr. Chas. A Suudar ia I'aris. A Sunday tn Paris is as tboroughl unlike a Sunday lu this country as it is possible to be. Work goes ou there the same as ou a week day; the shops are almost all open; the wagons laden with goods to go about the street; people attend to nearly all their avocatious, and until
noou they work just the same as if it i were a week day. After midday. I everything closes except the cafes and newspaper offices-for the evening i papers all come out on Buudays with their raciest editions and the city ! takes a holiday. I suppose some of the Parisians go to church on Sunday
but it really seerns as if church-going was the least matter tl ought of by most people. They have their horse racea and their eiectious on Sunday, their theaters and operas give the best performances in the evening, and the exposition on Sunday drew Its
