POETS1 CORNER. Can't do Without a i'apcr! A SOLILOQUY EY OXE OF THE PEOPLE. "What! do without a paper? No, I've tried it to my sorrow; fo, to suW.ibe for one, I'll go, Nor wait until to-morrow. Should lovers hang or tlrown themselves. Or other foolish cappr, 1 never get to hear of it I do not take the paper'. Why, there's my neighbor, Toby Stout, He alwavs heres the news, And having news to talk about, He never gets the "blues;" While others yawn in ennui, His mind is light as vapor; The cause is plain to half an eyelie always takes the paperj ..... Wlnle neighbor Stout hears all the news, And knows each current price. And always minds the P's and Q's Uy taking good advice, I cannot tell the price of grain, Or poultry, coffre, tape, or Any kind of merchandise Uecause I take no paper! Though I have studies which require Much time and mental labor. Yet I can spare a little time As well as .Stout, my neighbor; Though time he precious, J can use A longer midnight taper, And thus lind time to "read the news Therefore, I'll take a paper! But now which one shall I select, So many greet my vision? One stubborn fact which I detect Shall influence my decision: The freest paper and the best Is filled with nkws and thymes, And when I bring it to a test, I think I'll take the "Pilot.' There is a man out West vhose beard is so strong that it takes a barber and a broker to shav him, and it is frequently not rUan at that.
SQIBS. Why is a dandy like a haunch of venison. Ans. He is a bit cf a buck. The busy man is tempted by the devil.
but the lazy man actually tempts him. Why is an active waiter like a race horse? Ans. He runs for the plate. A man cannot run away from himself. His evil genius will follow him, whithersoever he may turn his footsteps. Why should marriage be spoken of as a tender tie? Because it is so tough that nothing but death can cut it. Why is a drowsy person like the track of a slow sailing vessel? Because he is hardly awake. Why is a liquor merchant like a man of perpetual vivacity? Ans. He is never out of spirits. 'All men,' says Byron, 'are intrinsic rascals, and I am only sorry that not be - ing a dog, I cannot bite them.' To seek redress of grievances by hav - ing recourse to the law is aptly compared to sheep running for shelter to a bramble bush. What two men are there whose influence is equal, and whose power extends from pole to pole? The carriers of a sedan chair. It may not be generally known that there is a sure remedy for the toothache by taking into the palm of the right hand a certain root---to wit, the root of the aching tooth. D'Israeli, in his 'Calamities of Authors,' mentions a student who devoted himself so assiduously to the study of the Oriental languages, as entirely to forget his own. Carrying politeness to excess is said to be raising your hat to bow to a young lady in the street, and allowing a couple of dirty collars and a pair of socks to fall upon the sidewalk. 'Rcmember, John' said a Pennsylvania sheriff to a friend who had shaken him rather roughly, 'remember, I don't care a copper about it, personally, but whoever shakes me shakes the commonwealth.' A lady hired a Western country girl for family 'help,' and was surprised to see her poke her head into the parlor one afternoon when visiters were present, and ask, 'Marm, did you call jest now? I thought I hearn a yell.' Rowland Hill made a good remark upon hearing the power of the letter H discussed, whether it were a letter or not. If it were not. he said, it would be a very serious affair for him, for it would make him ill all the days of his life, Whenever the wish is father to the thought it will be a (p)parent. It is easy enough to tell a hard drinker his offence is always brandied on the end of his nose. Why is a very angry man like a clock at 59 minutes past 12? Because he is ready to strike one. It rained so hard in Arkansas, last week, that people had to jump into the river to keep from drowning. The best bite we ever had on a fishing excursion was the bite we took along with us. Since the triumph of the Yankees in steaming and sailing, Yankee-doodle-do should be altered in England, to Yankee-doodle-did. Many who seem to carry the liberty of trouts---tickle them till they catch them. the people highest, serve them like There is a man in Indiana so thin that when the sheriff is after him, he crawls into his rifle and watches his adversary through the touch-hole. 'Don't be in a hurry---keep your seat,' when addressed to a visitor in an editor's office, means, 'clear out as fast as you can.' 'What branch of education do you have chiefly, in your school?' 'A willow at evening parties out West, where the cave in. He has had many of his own ribs broken in that way. What is the difference between the trunk of a tree and the trunk of an elephant? One leaves in the spring, and the other leaves whenever the menagerie does. A man down south, describing a lady who had swooned, goes on thus: Down fell the lovely maiden. Just like a slaughtered lamb. Her hair fell round her pallid cheeks, Like sea-weeds round a clam! 'Mrs. Smithers, where's (hic-cup) my shavel 'tensils?' 'Your shaving utensils?
