POETS' CORNER. Oil, the Weary, Weary Day. BT MRS. SARAH T. EOLTON. Oh, llie weary, weary day Lingers sadly on my heart; And seems to stay, despitefull", To keep our souls apart. fliit we'll meet alone to-ntght, JSy the iWer soudding streams And ever blooming bowers, In the fairy-land of dreams. Once again I'll lay my head On thy fond and faithful breast. And hear Ihee softly calling me Thy beautiful, thy best. Heart to heart, our lips will meet In affection's glowing kiss; And 0, it will be joy to feel . Ihit none ccn know our bliss. "With mj trembling hand in thine, Wc will wander far away, An I whisper all the hoarded lore We may not tell by day. And the angels passing by. With their brows so pure and pale, Will fold their sr.owy plumes awhile, To listen to the tale. They can see the inner heart. And I know they will approve The holy truth, the constancy, And fervor of our love. For the tie that binds our hearts Is the earnest God has given, To dwellers in this dreary world, Of happiness in heaven. 0, the ttrdy, toiling hours, Of the lonely, lingering day! I would 1 had some witchery To hasten them away. I will wait for thee, my love, In the vision land to-night: The stars will be our warders; Meet me, dearest, by their fight. HUMOROUS. A little Humor, note and then, Is relished ly the best of mtn. A Model Orator. The Buffalo Courier is the reputed parent of the following sprightly bantling: "1 want to get some man to go down into our district to make a "Whig speech" said a good honest farmer, as he bid good morning to a couple of Whig lawyers who flourished in the vic inity of the Exchange. "Can't you go down?" No, I can't, really. I've some business on hand that can't be delayed." Well, I'm sorry for that, for all the neighbors told me that you was the best man to get." 'Sorry I can't go; but so it is." 'Lookhere, my friend," said the other lawyer, "I sometimes make speeches myself." "Do you? then spose you go." 'Weil, I can't tell about that. I might not do very well. In '44 I roade a speech one night at a Whig meeting, and it took me until midnight to get through with it. The folks seem to like it well enough for three or four hotrs, but when it got into the big hours, every man of 'em left but one." That man was a good Whig I know.' 'Oh, yes certainly but he staid to dun me.' Better arGoot. 'Mynheer Von Schmitz if I may be allowed the question, how long have you been married?" Yaw, dat ish you shall say how long time ish it when I says to the minister dat I shall pelong to mine vrow, and tell me no questions?" Yes, that is what I mean; which is the same as asking how long you have "been married." 'Vel, dis is a ting vot I seldom don't likes to tink apout, but ven I toes, it seems to be so long as never vas." Akicdote. A wag had kept up a continual fire of witticisms at a social party, when a puritanical gentleman sharply observed: If you keep on, you will make every decent person leave the house." That would be a sorry joke," was the dry reply, "for you would certainly be very lonesome when left here alone." "Is your uote good!" asked a woodman the other day, of a person who offered a note for a load of maple. ' Well," replied the purchaser. "I should think it ought to be everybody's got oner The young Ladies short Catechism. "What is the whole duty of woman? To dress to sing to dance to play on the pianoforte to gabble French or German, and to preside gracefully at the tea table! What is a manT A thing to waltz with to flirt with to take one to the theatreto laugh aU-ip be married to to pay one's bills and to ke?p one comfortably. What is life?
