tur. The New York lief aid conti ins a brief biography of the late Com. Barron, from which tve extract the following account of the celebrated duel between that offiter and Decatur. On the 12th of Jene, 1820, Barron commenced the correspondence with Decatur, by addressing him as fellows; I have been irormed in Norfolk, that you said you con- nsult me with impunity, or words to th. t effect. If you have said so you will no doubt avow it: and I shall expect to hear from you.1 Decatur replied o the 17th of the same month, disavowing the offensive expression attributed to him. Two other letters followed, explanatory of the first: the correspondence ended for the time, and DecatuT considered it at an end. Nearly four months afterwards, on the "23d of October, Barron again wrote to Detitur complaining of his attempts to injure him with his friends; and considering him as having expressed a willingness to meet in the field, which he regarded as an invitation to fight, he informed him that he had accepted it. Decatur replied in an elaborate anJ insulting letter bat disclaiming all personal enmity. Finally, after some correspondence, Decatur left the adjustment of the ierms of meeting rvijh Iiis friend, Com. Bainbridge. On the 6th of March, 1S20, Com. Bainbridge was visited on board the Columbus, seventy-four, (then lying in the Potomac, preparing for sea,) by Capt. Elliot, as the friend of Com. Barron, for the purpose of making final arrangements for the meeting. The duel took place at Bladensburg, near Washington City, ou the 22d of March, 1S20, and was fought with pistols, at the distance of eight paces, or yards, the shortest that is customary. This was done by the seconds to accommodate Com. Birron, whose vision was d fective. On taking their s'a.d;, Corn. Bainbridge informed them that lie von Id give the word qniukly "Present! one, two, threes" and they wire not to fir-i before the word "oue1 nor after the word "three." Com. Barron observed to Com. Decatur, "that he hoped, on met tuig in another world, they would be better friends than they had been in this." Cora. Decatur replied "I have uever tee yoar.enemy, sir." No proposal for a reconciliation was suggested. The concerted words were pronounced by Com. Bainbridge. At the word "two," they fired so exactly together, that only! one report was heard. Com. Barton fell, wounded in the riht hip, according to the acaounced intention of Decatur. t3 ftzd declared he would hit Barron in that part of his body. Decatur stood for a moraeEt erect, bat was observed to press his hand upon Iiis right side. He then fell, the ball having passed through the ablomen. lie remarked: "lam mortally-wouuded, at leat 1 believe so; and wish that 1 hail fallen in defence of vtty1 country." He vis raised ad supported a short distance, where he sank down exhausted, near toswhere Com. Barron lav. The latter "declared that every thing had been conducted in the most honorable manner;" and told Cora. Decatur, "thati he forgave him from the bottom of his heart." j Com. Decatur was borne from the field to the home of his afflicted family, in the1 carriage which had conveyed him to the ground. He lingered in great agony until half past ten the aauie night, when he ceased to breathe. Iook at the Difference.
