"Although Philadelphia enjoys it present almost an exclusive monopoly of the Western trade, the amount of business bears a small proportion to the former immense transactions at this season, and it is rare to find the warehouses in Market

It has nine settlements or towns, the two most distant are 300 miles apart on the Sea coast the others at various intermediate points. Its territory, procured by purchase, conta'ns nearly five hundred thousand acres of land, and other tracts can be easily obtained from the native owners in the same way. The government is modelled after our own, and is purely republican administered almost wholly by colored people. Agriculture is thriving and greatly extending. Four printing presses ate in opera'ion. Tweoty-ono churches are organized, some of them composed of native converts. More than thirty ordained ministers arc engaged in religious teaching. Many Sabbath schools are regularly attended.
