The attempt was unsuccessful, but a more daring one we seldom recorded. N. Y. Paper. A Philadelphia, while recently at the Falls of Niagara, generously directed that a staircase should be constructed, at his expence, to d sec ' from Jris or Goat Island to the root " in the chasms between the British American Falls. This, when completed, will alford a sublime spectacle. The Philadelphia Gazette suggests that the rumor of the assassination of Mr. Poinsett has grown out of the attack on Commodore Porter. The town authorities, says the York, (P.) Recorder, have forbidden the use of the market-house, a-id of the open space thereabout, to hucksters and others. This reformation was necessary, as that place was rapidly becoming a repository for filth and a rendezvo js for vice a public nuisance and a reproach to the town.
