Social Paradoxes.

High Wages and Cheap Goods. The object of all just governments is to encourage division of labor, and hence, productive industry; to secure a just exchange of labors fruits, and hence preserve equality. Labor is necessary unto life, division of labor unto happiness and free exchange of value unto liberty. Civilized society is organized to remove as far as possible those obstacles which have grown up to interfere with a free exchange of value. Labor is the source of all artificial value. The “Ga Orgos.” or earth worker, is the sole reliance of all mankind for existence. If a barrier is erected between the farmer, who feeds m ankind, and all those upon whom he must rely for clothing, shelter and impliments, which absolutely prevents or excludes communication, and obliterates all knowledge of the relative conditions of these two great factors of civilization, both factors are left perhaps fighting one another. While the person who acts as a medium between the farm and mechanic, the merchant receives the censure of both farmer and mechanic hence each organizes against the merchant without a thought of the other. The mechanic shuts himself up in the trades union and ex eludes his fellow workmen of ot her trades. The farmer organ • izes the Grange and excludes the merchant and mechanic. Each working for his own selfish interests, and against that of his fellow workingman, each demanding higher wages for himself and smaller wages for the other man; striving to sell the products of his own labor for more and buy the products of other men’s labor for less. In this relentless struggle we are fighting single handed against the combined influence of four organized opponents! The food producer struggling to increase the price of food, against the combined opposition of the maker of clothes, of shelter, impliments and of exchange, and combining with the speculator and each of his three opponents against each one of them*. The wily speculator being not a producer, but a consumer of all the products of each of the others, joins with each, to bear the prices of all the others. This lays us under a great disadvantage. We are arrayed against each other and combined with our common enemy. This organization is designed to unite those whose interests are identical, and to teach us who our natural allies are. The farmer, merchant, mechanic, and the laborer are brought together for consultation and discussion of their mutual reciprocal relations. This brings face to face the producer of every form of value, with the various consumers of every product. This intercommunication will naturally tend to cheapen the cost of exchange, bv eliminating the factor of uncertainty. It is the dealer in uncertainties who prof its by this lack of knowledge

among producers. The speculator buys the farmer’s wheat at forty five cents per bushel and sells it to the consumer at one dollar per bushel. The sewing woman makes a pair of overalls for five cents, the material of which costs twenty; the man who buys and wears them pays 45 cents for them. The wornap practically exchanges the garmeut she makes with tire farmer for his wheat, receiving twentyfive r cents for her product, and pay ingore dollar for a bushel of the farmer’s while the farmer practically exchanges the wheat for ihe garment receiving fifty cents for a bushel of wheat and fraying 45 cents for the overalls. Now it is plain that if we

double the woman's wages for making the garment it would only add five cents to the cost of the garment to the farmer; likewise, if the price of wheat weie doubled to the farmer, it would only increase the price of the flour from one dollar to one dollar and fifty cents. This mutual advance in the scale of labor wage would enable the farmer to buy the garment with one bushel of wheat and leave him 45 cents: While the woman cculd buy with her day’s labor one half more flour and still pay the farmer more for his wheat. It is not the merchant whom the farmer and mechanic hav to organize against, it is the gambler, the man who deals in uncertainties, who is.the enemy of society. A union of interests which links together the manufacturer the farmer and the merchant constitutes a combination of forces that no unorganized element can resist. In a hall filled with people representing every branch and division of labor. The questions asked, “Are there any vacancies in any branch of labor known?” “Any contracts for work in auy line of business to be let?” answered in the affirmative will enlist the attention of every one engaged in the line of business indicated and place in the hands of the bureau of education and information matter of general information of value to the members.

Each temple is a general intelligence office whiph tends to se cure attendance at the meeting. The question: “Has any member anything to sell?” or “Does any one desire to purchase any thing?” makes it to the interest of all to be at each meeting and hear what there is in prospect for them. The pledge to aid each other in finding employment by finding a market for the products of each and to patronize one another when the same can be done in justice to self, is a bond of union which strengthens the order and serves to attract members to it. PURCHASING AGENCIES. While it is not essential to membership to purchase the necessaries of life through the Agency, nor obligatory upon any member to sell the products of his or her labor through the Agency it is intended to make manifest to all advantages which members cannot afford to loose, and thus appeal to man’s own selfish instincts. Human nature is reliable. Human judgement is often at fault, and cannot be depended on with certainty. We make no fight against the middle man, he is one of us. The laws of Archery provide for ail who desire to investigate the workings of the order to take the initiatory degree whereby alone he can gain an insight into our methods and decide for himself.
