Dollar Defined.
A dollar’s worth of silver is 412% grains Standard (with alloy), or 371% of pure silver. This standard weight was adopted by Congress in 1792, and has never been changed; 371% grains of pure silver constitutes exactly a dollar’s worth of silver. —Chicago Tribune, January 17,1878.
