The Republican party met in national convention at Chicago May 16, 1860, and on the following day adopted a platform, in which was contained the following resolution: “4. That the maintenance inviolate of the rights of the states, and especially the right of such stale to order and control its own domestic institutions according to its own judgment exclusively, is essential to that balance of powers on which the perfection and endurance of our political fabric depends; and we denounce the lawless invasion, by armed force, of the soil of any state dr territory, no matter under what pretext, or among the gravest of enemies.” Prince Bismarck says that the United Statesjs able to make a success.of free coinage, and that international agreement can best be secured by the United States taking the imitiative in the matter
