Earle Reynold's Unique Position.
The following from a Detroit exchange may be of intereet to Rensselaer readers: A. Earle'*Reynolds, athletic manager of the Metropolitan Grand Opera Co., which recently sang in Detroit, was in the city yesterday en route to New York. “There is a great deal of work for a man to do in connection with such a company as the Metropolitan Grand,” said Mr. Reynolds. "I am athletic manager and trainer of Calve, Melba, Nordica, Mauriel, the De Reszke Brothers and the other stars of the organization. I taught them all how to skate in New York early in the winter. You see, opera singers do not have much chance to get out, and it is essential that they should be given a proper amount of exercise. While at Chicago I taught the stars named how to ride a wheel, and now they are all passionately enamored of the great outdoor sport. It is relaxation, in fact a tonic to their nerves. When it is too cold the ladies and the gentlemen take exercise in light gymnastics. .1 carry a a portable ‘gym’ with the company. “The operatic season is practically over. I left the company to rest up, but in about three weeks I will.. return to Detroit and my next move will be to go out on the road with the Fowler racing team. “It may not be generally known, but the De Reszke Brothers own one of the biggest racing stables in Europe. The string is quartered at their estate in Poland. They will race during the summer in Poland and Russia. While in St. Louis the brothers visited the fairgrounds race track. They were much impressed with the clever ridding of the colored jockeys, and commissioned me to hire two good boys. While in Chicago last week I signed Jerry Chorn, one of the Best western riders, and another smart knight of the pigskin, to ride for them. The boys will accompany the brothers home. There are no colored jockeys on the continent. I believe that one colored lad did go to England, but he did not stay there. The colored boys will certainly prove a great novelty in far away Poland and Russia and the De Reszkes expect the southern boys will show old world jockeys a few tricks in the art of riding. The white boys over in Poland are all too heavy to ride the 30 two-year-olds in the brothers’ string. Jead De Reszke will do all of the .training.
