“You can always tell when there is going to be a change in the weather,” remarked .a local weather prophet this week, “by noticing a girl’s bangs. I have found the sign better than all others I know of. No matter whether the bangs are naturally curly or whether art aids in the work, they are certain to become straight several hours before a storm. If rain is coming, the bangs will lose their curl four or five hours before it comes. Just watch this some day and see how true it is.”

Last Monday evening the Southers-Price Co. gave their farewell performance of “Faust" at the opera house, for the season. A splendid house greeted them and the universal verdict of the audience was that the renditioii of this great play was of the highest order. All new scenery was used in the production and added much to the smoothness of the performance. Mr Edwin Southers as “Mephisto” was excellent. He certainly has a proper conception of the part and pleased the audience. Miss Madalaine Price as “Dame Martha” was peculiarly good for many reasons, and sustained the part, in splendid style. Mr. Alphonso Phillips who takes the character of “Faust,” handled the part with care and it could not have been played with much more energy tftan that which he gave to it. He is a capable actor certain. The beautiful and innocent “Msrguerit.o” was nicely presented by Miss Marie Southers. Since their stay among us t hey have conducted themselves as la lies and gentlemen, and we hope they will not forget Rensselaer in the future, for we should certainly welcome them to our town.
Wliv didn't tin; various secret societies that went to Monticello. last Thursday, take the home band with them, and make a showing, instead of stranding into town like a lot of Indians. It is a wonder to us that we have a band. We have though, but our people don’t care whether they patronize the boys or not. If they were given some encouragement once In a great while the boys would appreciate it. We have a good baud but our citizens don’t take enough interest in the organization to encourage it in the least.

The Arena for September con- | tains a long- review of the Chicago Strike of ’94. The author dismisses the matter of riots and violence as being merely a matter for the municipal and state authorities to have dealt with under the provisions of the statutory criminal law, and not a question affecting the principles involved in the conflict between organized labor and organized capital. He then addresses himself to critical analysis of the rights of both parties in the conflict. These he defines according to the greatest legal authorities, Blackstone, Coke and others, and the common law constitution of the Uuited {States, and by the same analysis ho defines the nature and functions of the State and Federal Governments. Then the author declares the proper equilibrium of rights under the law, and shows the peril of such a confusion and perversion of them as was manifested during the labor troubles in Chicago. The paper is written in a very philosophic spirit, but it does not lack irony and wit. There is to be a reunion of the Kith, dHth and 87th regiments of Indiana left. Vol., at this place on the 29th and {-50th of this month. All the surviving soldiers of either one of these regiments are expected to be present.
