Our Birthday Edition.
The Rennelaer Pilot came I out on tinted paper last week in I honor of its fourth birthday.— j Wolcott Enterprise. The Rensselaer Pilot came out in flying colors last week the occasion being the -Ith birthday of that paper.—Lowell Tribune. The People’s Pilot of Rensselaer completed its third volume last week and celebrated the event by printing the issue on red paper.—Kentland Democrat. The last issue of the Rensselaer Pilot starts it upon the 4th year of its exiskmco. It is a fine local paper, and deserving of its business prosperity.— Goodland Herald. The Rensselaer Pilot came out last week printed on tinted paper, the occasion of its entry upon its 4th year in the field of Jasper county newspaperdom.— Remington Press.
A chapter of the Epworth League was organized at the Osborne school house last Sunday evening, by 13 members of the Rensselaer chapter. The new chapter starts with 29 charter members. The officers elected are as follows: Pres., C. A. Anderson: Ist vice pres., Miss Kate Wood; 2d vice pres., Miss Ola Dodd; 3d vice pres., Miss Edna Lee; 4th vice pres., Miss Rose Dedrick; sec., Ernest Newman; treas., Dan Robinson. They will meet every Sunday pvening at 8 o’clock. The members of the local chapter here are well pleased with such a nice beginning, especially at being organized in the country with so many members, which certainly speaks well for that community. The Populists of Benton county have nominated the following officers to be voted for at the November election: treasurer, Wm. Ferguson, auditor, Jas. Gay, Clerk, J. H. Whitehead, commissioners, Chas. Menefee. John Cochran. The Fowler Leader says that no fault can be found as to the personal of the ticket.
Baum’s bridge across the Kankakee river between Wheat-' field and Kouts, on the Porter and Jasper county line was received by the commissioners of both counties June 25. The length of the bridge is 182 feet and is constructed of wood. The cost of the structure was $785, of which amount Porter pays 5527.52 and Jasper $257.48. Prospects for a good corn crop were never better in Benton county than to-day. A good stand everywhere; the corn a good healthy color; and the ground clear of weeds, and as nice and mellow as a garden. This is the condition all oyer the country and it is hoped will continue through the season.—Fowler Era. The heaviest rain of the season fell last Saturday night and from reports it seems tc have been a general one throughout the country. The wind done considerable damage to the wheat-, oats and corn. The rain did much good to the growing crops. The electrical effects in the southern skies, on Saturday evening of last week was a beautiful sight to behold. It had the appearance of one continuous flash and the heavens -were lighted up in a grand man ner. The Kentland Democrat has made several valuable improvements in the appearance of that paper since it has changed hands.
