Used as a tooth powder alone or with a little prepared chalk, it whitens the teeth and makes the gums hard and rosy; it is a good gargle for sore throat, and if taken in time, will benefit if not cure the diphtheria. It will stop bleeding of the mouth, and in warm water is a good emetic and a remedy against several poisons. There is nothing better for sore feet or hands than salt and water, and for ordinary sore eyes, though a painful application, will often effect a complete cure.
An editor in central Indiana recently announced that in next issue of his paper he would begin the publication of a serial story entitled “The Prettiet Girl in Town.” Over 100 girls have sent letters warning him not to use their names. .

Owing to the inclemency of the weather, the Ladies’ Literary Society did not meet last week, but will meet this week, Saturday, May 27th, with Mrs. Jenkins. The same programme will be given that was intended for last Saturday. Agnes Coen, Pres.
Another interesting feature has been added to B. F. Fendig’s show window, in a complete set of World's Fair admission tickets. They are the property of Louie Wilcox, of Surrey, and he prizes them very highly. They are certainly valuable souvenirs of the world’s greatest show. Series of portraits of Cardinal Gibbons, Lord Rosebery and Richard Harding Davis will appear in the department of “Human Documents” in the June number of McClure’s Magazine. Every business house in Rensselaer should be closed next Wednesday afternoon during the Memorial services, as a respect for our honored dead, for whom the.day is observed.
The inclemant weather last Wednesday spoiled the field day exercises at St. Joseph College. A grand programme had been arranged, but the rain spoiled most of it. One of Rudyard Kipling’s greatest stories, amply illustrated, will appear in the June number of McClure’s Magazine. There will also be a story by Octave Thanet.
Marriage licenses have been issued to Sidney Schanlaub and Emma Brown, James H, Parker and Susan A. Wilson, since our last report.
