A DISMAL OUTLOOK.
Am Ei’Jaaperlie Tells JK tbe (•edition of Ike Werh> ln<men of CokirMkh An from Denver, Colo., to his brother in Rensselaer, gives the following report of the condition of affairs in Colorado as he finds it front actual experience? Dear Brotßbil: This is a black time for Colorado, and what is worse the clouds that overhang the horizon threaten to get lower and stronger. By the shtitdtlg Of smelters and ndines; and thh ciittlttg Of forces by railroad companies between 75,0 d() ahd itJOjOOO ineh arb thrown but of erijpldyment, afid aS I £ass along the street (for I am not at work either) I see from two to six working men on every corner. Last week I was in the Boulder valley (thirty miles distant) to get work at haying. I found plenty of hay and more plenty of men; in fact they were most plenty. Every place we heard the same story, viz., “so many mines and prospectors have come from the mountains that there are more men than work.” I have heard from all parts of the state and the news is just the same. I have done one day’sOwork since the 3rd inst., and that was strawberry picking yesterday, and I and a friend slept “out” within two miles of the patch or we wouldn’t have got that. But that kind of work is done, too. Some may wonder how silver mining affects the western states so disastrously. A large number of the mines produce both gold and silver, and if silver is worth nothing so much of the work goes for naught. The goldbug papers say, “Now is the time for Colorado to develop her agricultural resources.” That is just like the man after having his pork stolen, who said, “Well, now I shall live on beef” but didn’t have the wherewithal to purchase the beef. The people of this state havn’t the “wherewithal” to develope the corn and wheat resources of the state. Before the above resources can be developed irrigation ditches too numerous to mention must be built and water costs 4(200 per season for one hundred inches of water. The present silver crisis has set hundreds of men to “counting ties” some to tramping the dusty highways and others to standing on the street corners and sleeping with trees or sky for comforts. At the Depver hay markket, one day last week, one man asked a dozen farmers for work and got none. One of the farmers said to him, °I don’t want a hand, but I do want to know your price per day. ” The wouldbe laborer said 11.25 per day and board. The farmet said “you will not get it this year, and only yesterday thirty men were at my house asking for work. Some offered to work at a dollar a day, some for 75 cents and some for 50 cents, while some pleaded with tears in their eyes for work in order to support themselves and their dear ones at home.”

Zoar. 0.. is the abiding place of a mystic band of German Communists who hold all property in common, the place being a miniature kingdom within itself. The people, who call themselves Zoarites, own 7,000 acres of land, which all lies in one body, about half of the tract being in* a high state of cultivation. The original Zoarite purchase was 10,000 acres, but 3,000 have since been sold at a high figure. Every article, implement, device, contrivance, or machine used, wrought with, or employed in Zoar is of Zoarite manufacture, and the same may be said of every article worn or eaten, with the exceptions of coffee, tea and spices. The shoes the Zoarites wear are made by their own shoemakers, from leather prepared by their own tanners from hides taken from cattle bred and raised on the great community cattle farm. The coal which warms them and cooks their food is dug from their own mines, and is burned in stoves cast in their own foundry, from iron smelted in their own furnaces from ore found in abundance on their own lands. They have community tailors, bakers, weavers, buttermakers, cheesemakers and all other useful artisans and tradesmen. The tailor uses nothing but Zoarite cloth made by Zoarite weavers from wool sheared from Zoarite sheep. The same can be said of the whole catalogue of manufacturers, which certainly gives to Zoar dlstinc-
tlve characteristics unknown to any other American city or community.

lixilaaapoiH SratiueL A reporter recently visited the turkey ranch of A. Ferguacm at Liverpool. The first object that appeared strange was an old turkey gobbler strutting about alone, There were no hen turkeys in sight and the visitor inquired about them, Mr, Ferguson replied that he had lotsof femalWf but they were away set* ting. “Let us go and see ttatoti,” we suggested. . “By all means/’ replied Mr. FergtlSOii. “If you will show me' where they are.” “Do ybu mean to say you don't know where the turkeys are setting?” asked the visitor in astonishment.
“I know they are somewhere in the back part of the swamp,” replied Mr. Ferguson, “but I would’nt be able to raise a bird if I visited ‘their breeding grounds. Turkeys prefer to breed in the same localities as sand-hill cranes. I have reared young turkeys that had to swim from the place they were hatched at. The old hen never moves after the chicks are hatched for four days, and there is not a particle of egg-shell left, then the old one starts off. I have made a study of turkeys and their habits, and what f say is correct. North America is the natural home of the turkey. If left to themselves the males and females separate during the summer months. It is a peculiar fact that after the beginning of July the gobbler can’t gobble any more until he has moulted and got a brand new suit of clothes. The hens have deserted the gobbler already, but will return to him in the autumn, bringing back their offspring. Then I will know how many turkeys I will have. The great mistake people make is in trying to rear turkeys. They kill them by feeding. Make a note of this: Fed chicks die of indigestion. Leave them alone and they will grow up strong.”
