People's Pilot, Volume 2, Number 35, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 17 February 1893 — Demonetization of Silver. [ARTICLE]

Demonetization of Silver.

The act of 1873, demonetizing silver, carried with it more far reaching consequences than anyother measure ever passed by the American congress. Notwithstanding this acknowledged fact, it is an historical truth that the bill was neither read nor debated in the house or senate, and it is futher true that of the whole number, about 400, engaged in the passage of the bill, only two would ever admit that they knew anything of the contents of the measure. The president, vice president and every member of the senate and house plead ignorance excepting Hooper and Sherman. The passage of the bill and its attending circumstances and inevitable consequences, has no parallel in the history of legislation.
