FAIR OAKS.
Thomas Mallett is doing a thriving business. We presume that he will be our next post master. A large new hay barn adorns our place and it was built by Mr. Russell for Mr. Colwell. Mr. Fish Gilmore is hauling baled hay for Mr. Colwell. Mr. Levi Hodge purchased the Ed Johnson property and will occupy the premises in the near future. Mr. William Burns is working in the hay press business. Mr. Gundy has just finished putting up a large quantity of ice. Tramps are numerous. One gentleman tramp insisted on occupying the depot to his own advantage the other night. But Mr. Green, the night operator, very quietly informed him that it was contrary to the rules and regulations of the railroad company. The tramp, seeing something in Mr. Green’s eye that meant business, skipped immediately and has not been heard from since. OLD SOLDIER.
HANGING GROVE.
Mr. Jos. H. Long returned last Friday from a very pleasant visit with his parents in Ohio. Reed Banta is building a large hay barn at Marlboro for A. McCoy. Mr. Samuel Robinson, of Morocco, visited his mother Mrs. Mary Ann Robinson last week. Last Saturday evening was the occasion of a grand New Year’s supper at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Mason Kenton. Mr. Harvey Phillips and wife, of Chicago, visited their many friends and relatives in Hanging Grove last week. Elvin Overton, of Surrey, attended the dance at Mr. Martin’s last Thursday night. Mr. Chas. Armstrong, of Marlboro, gave a very pleasant oyster supper to the young folks of that place last Saturday night. The Hanging Grove literary society meets at the Osborne school house to-night. Miss Effie Gwin spent the vacation with her brother at Valparaiso. Mr. N. M. Banta, of Chicago, was in Hanging Grove last week. On Saturday, Jan. 14th, there will be a box supper at the Marlboro school house, the proceeds of which will be expended for the Young People’s Reading Circle Books. L. H. Hamilton, the teacher of said school, will read an address on the Reading Circle work. Everybody is cordially invited to attend. A special invitation is extended to the young folks of Rensselaer. SPUG.
WHEATFIELD.
Holidays are over and the schools have commenced again. The citizens of Wheatfield are attending court. The “old fashioned party” at the Mason school house, in Gillam township, was a success and the last entertainment of the year. Elder P. E. Davis is holding meeting at Glendale, in Gillam township. Ward Hamilton and wife are visiting in Wheatfield. Relatives have been visiting the Davis family this week.
JORDAN.
Protracted meeting at Union this week. Nate Kerrie and wife are down from Wheatfield spending the holidays with friends and relatives. Come out to the discussion at Union to-night. Able leaders on both sides. Mr. W. W. Swartz, who has been tax collector in this district, has moved away. Marion, Ind., is his new home. Music is furnished at the Union meeting by Bro. Snead and Vice. Banjo and organ are the instruments used. Among the funny things to take place at a protracted meeting the funniest was to see Bro. Snead kiss Bro. Vice. When we see the finest and best young girls of our country marry the lowest down, lazy inebriates that are not worth powder and shot enough to kill them, it makes us think there is something wrong with our school system. Isn’t there a need for something like sociology to be taught in our common schools? Oh yes! “Jack the Ripper,” “Reformer” understands very
clearly “Little” Kitt’s political standing. The readers of the PILOT are well aware that “Little” Kitt turned over the product of his pen to Republicanism and the devil for about 720 Republican subscriptions that were threatened to be withdrawn from his list. Why, "Jack" Kitt took less money for ‘'Fort Herald” than Benedict Arnold did for West Point, yet you are so blinded by the light of your wisdom as to call him “no political crank.” Oh yes! “Reformer” is well acquainted with “Little” Kitt; knew him when he lived at Remington; had the pleasure to call on him for mail Nov. 8,1888. While handing over the same, “Reformer” asked concerning the election. Our “Little” Kitt, with tears in his eyes and faltering voice, replied: “It’s doubtful. You can’t depend on flying report.” If Kitt told you he was perfectly satisfied over the result of the election. I think he told you a lie, pure and unadulterated. If he had foreseen Cleveland’s election he, no doubt, would have told those Republican subscribers to go to the devil, that he was working for the good of his country,” as all political hypocrites do. Tell me some more about “Little” Kitt. Wednesday while Tom Walters was in town McCoy’s cattle, that he is pasturing, broke through the wire fence into Wm. H. Cain’s field where they destroyed some shock-corn for which the squire taxed Tommie five dollars. A good way to sell corn. A white crow has been staying in Charley Hensler’s grove. Parties in Remington have offered a good price for the bird dead or alive.
Piles of people have piles, but De Witt’s Witch Hazel Salve will cure them. A. F. Long & Co. Why Are Wheeler & Wilsons "No 9" SEWING MACHINES POPULAR? BECAUSE LADIES BUY THEM, LIKE THEM AND TELL THEIR FRIENDS Many ladies have used our Machines twenty to thirty years in their family work, and are still using the original machines we furnished them a generation ago. Many of our machines have run more than twenty years without repairs, other than needles. With proper care they never wear out, and seldom need repair. We have built sewing machines for more than forty years and have constantly improved them. We build our machines on honor, and they are recognized everywhere as the most accurately fitted and finely finished sewing machines in the world. Our latest, the “No. 9,” is the result of our long experience. In competition with the leading machines of the world, it received the Grand Prize at the Paris Exposition of 1889, as the best, other machines receiving only complimentary medals of gold, silver and bronzeThe Grand Prize was what all sought for and our machine was awarded it.
