Ilnw they could have been made to combine so much simr li i'y and beauty, with so much grandeur and Mib hmitv, is a secret not easily explained. Imagination cannot picture to itself a scene of such architectural magnificence. No ; en ran delineate its beauties, and no description, however vivid-, can convey to the mind an adc quate idea of it. Were Rome, with all its associations, swept from the earth, and nothing remained to fill the solitude but St. Peters, its port'eos would be thronged with admirers from every part of Christendom. But after passing this temple, ve have sen all that modern Rome can oGVt worthy of her n:::r.e. She lays no claim to the arches, columns and pillars which adorn her streets and public squares; they serve only as splendid mementos of her ancient grandeur: and the modern Roman who points out to you the Coliseum, the arch of Constant ine, and the Pantheon, is only showing you the remains of a city which once ctooJ cn the cpot in which he glories as his birth-place he is only a Roman by name. Yet this city, degraded and fallen as it is, is still dear to the scholar. Its melancholy, sombre streets, have a charm for him, which mere magnificence could never impart. The solitude which surrounds him is peopled with the associations of his studies, and though alone, hi companions ere Cesar, Cicero, and Virgil.

The guardian angel of the flowers, who, in the .Hence of night, sprinkles them with refreshing dew, once, on a spring day, was slumbering in the shade of a rose bush. And when he awoke, he spoke with friendliest mien: Most lovely of my children, I thank thee for this balsamic odour, and for thy cooling shade. Was there any thing left for thee to desire, how cheerfully would 1 grant it. Adorn me, then, with some new charm, prayed the spirit of the rosebush. And the angel adorned the beautiful flower with a simple moss. How lovely appears in this modest attire the moss rose, the handsomest of her species.
