Extract of n letter, dated Washington city, Jan. 7 A great crowd was attracted this morning, (Suodav) to. the Capitol, to hear a female, iMiss Livermore, pronounce a sermon in the Representative's Jail. Tin President and many of the cdm ers of the executive were present; also senators, rc presentaive, and citizens in great profusion. Tiiis lady is a quakeress; at any rate her dress denotes lnjr such. Her text was: "Judges and rulers over men should bo

j just, and live in the fear of the Lord"-uoon

which she enlarged with boldness and severity ; castigating will ..spirit and vehemence not unworthy a comparison with the outpourings &f ihe far-.'amed Irvinof the HattonG irden Caledonian Cuape!,the follies and v ices to which great men, Ihe judges and rulers of the people, are usually expr-sod. 'JV mpjations she argot d, an ailed them every ?tep, and few had fortitude enough lo avoid ihe attat k-; of pride a-d !elf exaltation. The rulers of the people were not alone sharers in her adm-.ni-lions. I'I asure, in all its shapes, she deprecated: the rout, the ball, the theatre, all took their turn. She admonished the fair portion of her auditors, that fcMhe Bible would grace their lily hands much better than a pat k ofcaids," and men in cilice whose duty it was to place good examples before the people, that their evenings would be better employed in searching the st ripf ures, than in folly and dissipali-in. Thf discourse was interesting, and its sty le rathrr good. Mr. Reynold, the pupil of Capt. S; mmes, o cupicd the Hall ot the Representatives ;a-t evening, and delivrcd a I cture upon ihe formation of the earth. The lady endeavoured to show the hollnwness of all worldly nlea-uree a! joy meats, and Mr. Reynolds to establish the hollowness of the world itself. It would be difficult to decide w hich of the lectures were the most successful in convincing the hearers. Jczv York American,

Norfolk. Jan. 13. Wre learn frrm Capi. Hu'chens, of the brig Mides that a serious disturbance took place at Rio Janeiro, a "few days previous to his sailing in November lat, in consequence of the impressment of a man wno represented him?elf to be an Af rican. A midshipman of the U. S. ShipCaync who was superintends g ome workmen from the ship, in making or repaint ga mast, whilst rc"onslrat:i g with the pn ss gang against th imprisonment of American seamen, wa? violently assailed by the commandant of the Arsenal, by a blow which nearly felled him to the ground, he instantly returned the compliment, and laid his assailant at his feet. During this affray, the press gang arrived with n uskets, bayonets, &c attacked the mid-hip man and beat him seveiely. Lieut. Levy, 1st of the Cay lie, who came to the scene of conflict, was also wounded by the bayonets of the press-gang. Capt. Hutchen'a mate and 4 men, were pressed by tho gang; and the Captain of a brig belonging in Now Vmk was taken by these marau

ders; and carried beyond the suburbs of tho town; all of them, however, were subsequently released. Beacon. A reference to the proceedings of Congress w ill show that; -the Committee on Manufactures has reported a hill increasing, considerably Vthe existing duties on woollen goods. ,vThc bill was twice lead and referred to a Committee of the whole, on the State of the Union, but it should not be inferred from that circumstance, that the position was favourably received by the Heu-e, since tho first and second readings of bills are seldom, or nevqr-opposed. Wo have taken some pains, o ascertain tho probable fate of the bill, and we have come to the conclusion, that nothing will grow out of it at the present se.sion.-cr Gaz.
