expediency ol making u me tiuty ol prosecuting attornies in their several judicial circuits, to file information, upon which the circuit courts shall issue w rits of o warranto against associate judges, sheriffs, clerk, justices of the peace, and other inferior officers, where a bill of indictment may have been found against the person holding such office for a crime, the commission of which would subject such person if conv icted to he imprisoned in the state prison, or to suffer other infamous punishment. And also, make it the duty of such prosecuting attorney to tile information agaimt the officers aforesaid for mat conduct in office, and in either case, upon the facts set out in such information being found true by a jury of twelve men upon an impartial trial, to authorize the circuit court to remove said officer from bis office. Ou motion of Mr. Gray, thii resolution was indefinitely postponed. January 9. Mr. Stevens, from the judiciary committee, reported it inexpedient, at this time, either to increase the number of judial circuits, or to increase the number of terms of the circuit courts; which was concurred in. 7 The engrossed bill to amend. December 29. The Speaker laid before the House of Representatives Die following corrnunicatioa from the Vice President of the United Slates: To the honor obit the members of the Hmtse of Representatives : An imperious sense of' duty , and a sacred regard to the honor of the station I occupy, compel me to approach your body iu its high character of grand inquest of the nation. Charges have been made against me of

j the most serious nature, and which, it true,

ought to degrade me from the high station

in winch 1 have been placed by the choice of my fellow citiz ns, and to consign my name to perpetual infamy . In claiming inv stigation of the House, I am sensible that, under our free and happy institutions, the conduct of public servants is a fair suhjet t of the closest scrutn y and the freest remarks, and that a firm and faithful discharge of duty affords, ordinarily, ample protection against political attacks, but when surh attac ks assume the character of impeachable offences, ai d become in some degree official, bv In it g

! placed am ng the public records, an cfh er I Dm assailed, however base the instiuj moots used, il conscious of innocence, can j look for refuge only to the ball of the imj mediate represei tatives of the people. It

is thus 1 find myself uurxpei tcdly placed. Ou Wednesday morning last, it was for the first time intimated to me, that charges of a very serious nature against me were lodged in one of the executive departments: during the day, rumors from seve-

j ral quarters, to the same effect, reached me; but the first certain information of

their ch nacter was received yesterday morning through one of the newspapers of the District. It appears from its statc-moiit-. that I am accused of the sordid and infamous crime of participating in the profits of contracts formed with the government through the department of war, while I was entrusted .vith the dicharg of its , dutie, atd that ihe accusation has been offi ialiv presented as the basis of an effirial act of the war department, and consequently, to be placed among its iccord?, as a lasting stigma on my character. Conscious of my entire innocence in this-, and every other public act, and that

I have ever been incapable, m the periormanre of dutyVof being influenced by any other motive than a sacred regard to the public interest, and res. lved, as far as human effort can extend, to leave an untarnished reputation to posterity , I challenge the freest investigation of the house as the only means effectually to repel this premeditated attack to prostrate me, by destroying forever my character. J. C CALHOUN, Vice President of the U. S. JVa?hin:toiK29lh December, 182G. The foilow imr gentlemen compose the special committee to whom this subject was referred: Messrs. Floyd, Wright, Williams, Campbell. Clarke, Ingersoll, and Sprague. Janwtry 2. In the House of Representative?, Mr. Livingstou offered the following resolution: Resolved That the committee of ways and means be instructed to prepare and bring in a bill making an appropriation of .$50,000, to be expended under the direction of the President, in the purchase and transportation of provisions for the suffering inhabitants of Greece. Mr. Livingston, in offering this resolution, observed, that having passed one day, the first of the year, in the very proper and becoming enjoy ment of the retrospect of our past prosperity, it became the House to devote the second day of the year to an act of national humanity, which, without committing us in any way with foreign nations, would reflect yreat ai d lasting honor on our own country. He alluded to the case of the sutiering Greeks. He had now before him a letter written by an honorable member of this House upon do subject, a perusal of which must touch the hearts of all. This gallant people, contending in the holiest of all causes, are ut this moment suffering not only under the horrors of war, hut of famine, and also of pestilence, which ara this pcncirj attendat tsofwar.
