Judge Scott, in the article below, has entirely missed his mark. The gentleman to whom he so plainly alludes is not the author of 'Amicus Justitia." To the Editors of the Public Legcr. Gentlfmex: When I left your office this morning I had no idea of troubling ou

However, after arrivii g at this place, and having taken a slight look at the production of "Amicus," I came to the conclusion to address a few words t: him, which I hope you will have the goodness I to publish in your next paper. j l now address myself to" Amicus Justitia. Sir. notwitstanding the advantages

you possess over me, which you have acquired, in part, from the practice of the law, and all vu may acquire "by sitting in a" Representatives "vacant seatv I feel resolved to stand in my own defence: ai d I do assure you that the high opinion you . have of your ovrn abilities, and the in port ant i (lice you now fill. Ohio Canal. It will be recollected that the able report of the Committee cn Roads and Canals, presented by Mr. Stewart, at the close of the session, and ordered to be printed in the recess, will be discussed and acted on at the approaching session. The practicability of this canal, exceeding in importance, both in a commercial ai d military point of view, any other which has been executed or projected, has been full

established; it has been shewn on the evidence of facts not to be contested, that this important communication with our Western States can be effected at a cost below one-third of what was asserted at the last session, and at less than one-half of the estimate exhibited by the Engineers. We place this Canal at the head of all the pro

jected works of Internal Improvement be

cause its benefits will extend through so man States, and along such an -extensive line of settled country, because it will by destroying the mountain barrier which severs the interests of the West from those of the East, make us one people, posscssh g a common interest and a common feeling, and because its benefits will be felt by those of our citizens who are as yet only pioneers of the next generation. We have no doubt that our views of the importance of this measure will be sustained by the sentiments

of the country, expressed through their

The present season of surveys of routes for roads and canals has nearly reached its close. The rapid advance of colder and more inclement weather will speedily terminate the labors of the camp, and bring home our Engineers to prepare the results of their labors, for the infoimation of the pe ople, through their constituted organs. Although, perhaps, the i llkient means in the hands of the General Government may not have been found ade quate to satisfy the wants of every section oi the Union wants which must greatly outstrip, for some time, the power to supply them, in consequence both of the rapid growth of our population, and of the process ol education which it requires to pioduce sciei UhV men, in suflicicnt number yet wc believe it will be

Lead bines. The United States' lead mines aie now becoming a source of considerable revenue. The number of diggers and smelters, at the upper mines, have greatly increased, and are still increasing, irid the quantity of lead made; this year will exceed in a four-fold ratio that of for mer y ears. Should a part of the rent ari ing from these mines be appropriated to making the great road to Potoi. the mine

district in Missouri, the result would be ou

incalculable advantage to the states ot 11 linois and Missouri, as well as to the United States. At present, the rapids are the onlv obstruction to the navigation in the Upper Mississippi, and when once removed, the river will remain open to steam boats during the greater part of the year. Aho-Crlcans, Sept C Upon due inquiry, and for the information of our absent citizens, we state that this city was never more healthy at this season, nor perhaps at any other time in the y ear, than it is at present. We consider the question as set-

jth d that we shall have no epedemic yeli low fever here this fall. We have no

dubt but our absent citizens and stran

gers will be safe in returning by the mid

dle of next month, and that business w ill open much earlier this year than usual.
