tion in this little district 3,730 dcdlars for the labor of six weeks. Maryland. The Easton Gazette gives a gloomy account of the appearance oi ihe crops in this State. The wevil tly has made its appearance, and caused extensive devastations, which cannot be repaired. Whole fields are dtstoyed; the thin lands will scarcely produce their seed some not half. The continual drought has
j added to the general distress. The corn
crops have not yet received any serious injury. "Oats promise nothing the gardens suffer extremely the fruit ris generally destroyed; and grass never'promised a worse crep.'" Virginia. The crops in this state present a gloomy prospect. In consequence of the incessant drought very little tobacco has been planted, andthe plants in the ground are fcvercly suffering. The wheat and oat fields look badly. Large fields are planted with corn, and not a sprout is to be ecn; much has been replanted. The gardens are literally burnt up. Ohio. The quantity of land appropriated for the use of common schools in this state, is 647,730 acres. The amount returned by the assessors in 1825, is 500,769 ac res, valued at 923,723. This amount, added to the value of the lands not returned, will present an aggregate of 1,070,630; the annual interest of which, at six per cent, would be 64,241. Of these lands, 139,640 acres are at permanent lease, 136,735 at lease from year to year, and 371,305 not leased. Alabama. The crops in this state look remarkably well. Cotton, corn, and small grain, have seldom presented a. more promising appearance in the middle of the last month. During the month of April, Mobile exported 5,740 bales of cotton to foreign ports, and 7,169 coastwise total, 13,909. In the same time 70,000 feet of lumber and 20,000 staves were shipped coastwise.
