The committee on the subject of taxes, from the Legislature of New-York, have reported that, it is inexpedient to make any alteration in the law for assessment and collection of taxes, as probably taxes will in a short thyie, be entirely dispensed with." What a comment upon the doctrine of internal improvement. It is said that Mr. Stephen P. Conn, of Georgetown, District of Columbia, has really discovered the practicability o f melting iron by steam only and he has so far succeeded as to bring the iron down to welding heat by this process. In Lousiana, the legislature has passed an act to remove the seat of government of the state from New-Orleans in Donaldsonville, about severity milts in the interior, on the Mississippi. The London committee for the relief of Spanish and Italian refugees, having proposed to charter a vessel to convey such of them as were disposed to embark for NewYork or Philadelphia, we may soon expect to see a number of these uufortuate patriots on our shores. Washington and Bolivar. The similitude of trial as well as of fortune between these two great men who seem to stand out beyond the level of all other greatness, is truly wonderful. Bolivar it appears was idle red a crown, and it is well known, that at Trenton a proposal was digested for the establishment of rank in this eoun try, which the virtuous Washington put down by a single sentence 'those," said lie "who seek an elevation above the peoi le will find it on a scalllold.'' Snowdens Advo. The survey of the route for a canal to unite the Atlantic and Pacific oceans has been commenced. Food and Physic. If you have a severe cold and are very hoarse, have some water gruel prepared in the ordinary way; when nearly ready slice in two or three onions; simmer it again twenty minutes; pour it out; put in a lump of butter, with pepper and salt, and eat it (with bread if you are hungry;) go to bed soon after; the next morning, if you are not quite well, you will be much improved, and willing to try a second dose, which will certainly effect a cure. The emperor of China accepts presents

The case of Catharine Staley against Charles Burkhart, for a breach of promise of marriage, came on in the court of Frederick county, on Wednesday last. This is the only trial of this character that has taken place in this county for many years some sav the first that has ever occurred. The light in which such offence is viewed by a Frederick county jury, is exhibited in their verdict It was $3,000 for the plant i ff. Ma ryla nd paper. Piracy. A most aggravated and cold blooded case of piracy is mentioned in the
; papers as hav ing taken place near the Ma- ' tanzas. The brig Betsev. capt. E. Hilton,
from Wiscasset, Maine, when 21 days out, struck on one of the Shot Keys and went to pieces. The crew gained the boat, succeeded in landing, and engaged 5 men, suppo
sed to he hshers, to take them to the MaJ tanzas. After they got under way, a boat came in with pirates who fired upon them, j boarded them, and without the least prospect of gain, or feeling the least commisse- ! ration for their helpless condition, hewed 'them in pieces, cut off'bHr h'atJ on 'p

couml'kicated It is said that a pjiddhig was oace made in the form of a cooe, whose oase covered a half acre of ground, and that some hundred yankee's had just done' eating a section of it, (the chord of the section's arc measured 35 yards on the puddiog's base, and was cut down by a line perpendicular to it.) when, unluckily, a sudden gust of wind broke 100 feet of the top square off, and covered its votaries in the ruinous heap. Now, as it was considered unsafe to permit the remainder of the puddi: g to stand, it became necessary to count the cost of moving it at 5 cents per solid vard. Therefore, required the s did content of the piece broken off, whose base measured 18.5 feet the content 'of the section devoured by the yankeos;' also, the content of the whole pudding, and the cost of moving the part as above. The Israelites. The pope has lately issued an edict for the conversion of the Jews of which the following is an extract: "In order the better to spread the light of the gospel amongst the Israelites, the measures taken during the time of pone
Clement VIII, to compel Jews to attend ! Catholic sermons, and which was oidy inI terrupted by the recent political events to j which Italy has been a prey, are re-estab
lished from the date of 1st March last." The edict afterwards orders "300 Jews to attend sermon every Saturday evening, and that, according to their turn, there shall be amongst them 100 individuals aged from 12 to 13 years, and 50 girls and women of the same age, Each time that a Jew misses sermon, when it is his turn to attend, he shall pay a fine of 5 paofi: no excuse will be admitted, if the oldest Jews

Died on the 8th ult. at Washington City, Bi Warrior, principal chief of the Creek nation. He was a man of great
! talents as a savage warrior-.-a person of im
mense bodily powers, and it has been said of him that he was endowed with a mind as collossal as his body. Although he possessed not the advantages of education, or even of understanding but little of the English language, yet he has done much towards improving the condition of his people, and had great influence over them. During the late Indian wars, he had been uniformly friendly to the whites & fought for them in many battles. lb. Cuba. A Spanish fleet, consisting of two frigates and a sloop of war. with several transports, having on board from 2000 to 2500 troops, arrd at Havana from Spain, about the 18th Feb. This reinforcement, it is hoped, will so strengthen the governor, that he may feel himself enabled to act against the piratical inhabitants of the Island. Mies.
