pass from sale. Until directed by law. an
that the state of Indiana is atHhnrbed. without waste, to Use the materials on the public lands adjacent lo the said canal for its construction. It has been sugefed to your committee
that the proposed ronle is about 23 miles.
and the grant, estimating the breadth of the pr p sed canal at 40 feet at the surface will therefore cover about b21 acres. This grant, your committee regret to ay, bears upon its face such a character, of
1 chnrncis and penury that no politician hav- ; ing a jut regard to the interest of the state. S aught to be willing to accept. The con jditions f the grant are of more value, ! vour committee consider, than the grant I itself: hut your committee an not without hope, that upon a second application to ' Congress the grant may be so extended, ! that the state may accept of it without material detriment to her interest. In the ; eve.it of Congress so extending the grant.
and the objection that mst part of the route is now covered by Indian title, can he removed bv an extinguishment of that title, your committee are of opinion that measures should he taken to secure the territory, in order to the eventual accomplishment of the project. From information your committee believe, the canal is quit- practicable, and that its ultimate ad vantage to the state will be very great. Vour committee therefore, recommend the adoption of a memorial to Congress for the purpose of extinguishing the Indian title, and procuring an e.dargement of the grant,
