KEEPING UP ON SOCIAL SECURITY A recent change in the social security law has 'brought many questions a-
bout its benefit. In March,
1966, a change was made to provide a special cash monthly benefit payment to those 72 or over who could not qualify for a benefit under the regular provision. A person 72 or older before 1968, may receive the benefit even though they have never worked under social security. A person becoming 72 in 1968 or later will needi some work under
social security. - There is a restriction on those who are already receiving a pension, retirement pay, annuity or similar payment from a federal, state or local governmental pension system, The special
benefit will be reduced or
precluded depending , on the
amount of the other governmental pension. Some Vet
erans Administration compensations and workmen's
compensations Are excluded.
A person receiving cash public assistance payments
can not receive the special
benefit for a month in which he receives an assistance
payment.
If a person is 72 or over in October. 1966. and has
already applied for hospital
insurance, the social security office will get in touch with, them. But if a person is 72 or over and is one of the few yrho did not sign up for hospital insurance, it is advisable for them to get. in touch with the social security office now. The benefit will be $35.00 a month for single persona and in the case of married couples the man will receive $35.00 and! the wife $17.50 if both are 72 or ov er. The benefit starts with the month of October, 1966, with the checks being mailed in November. If you want more irifor mation write V for pamphlet OASI-1966-1 Special Benefit for people 72 or over."
