MORE than 6,500 persons in the United States are killed each year by fires in homes. Many of these fatalities result from clothing catching fire from open stove burners, grates or gas heaters. A deplorable number of men and women lose their lives when they doze off in bed or in a chair while holding a lighted cigarette. Fireproofing is a way to reduce these fatalities. A new chemical mixture which fireproofs cotton, wool, rayon and silk has been developed by the United States Department of Agriculture in cooperation with the Army Quartermaster's Corps. Scientists report that the mixture can be used in large laundry machines in hospitals, commercial laundry plants and other institutions. The flame rctardant does not change the appearance of treated fabrics; in fact, the mixture offers fireproof protection for the life of the fabric and also makes the fabric resistant to mildew, shrinkage, rot and wrinkles. Repeated washing does not impair the effect of the fireproofing quality. I Fireproofing of all materials ,worn and used in the home is a safeguard against the danger of death by fire.
