This column is addressed principally to fiarents of grammar school children. Can you, Imagine having the following conversation with your child? "Look, son, which la worse, splttbj oil the Bible, or spitting on the American Flag?"
Now you know If you asked this of your son or daughter within earshot of responsible citlsens, you would most likely be brought Into court to either
test your fitness as a parent,
or to decide on your sanity. But this la Just one of the questions being asked school children by so-called counselors paid for In part by the I'nited States Department of Health, Education and Welfare. Rep. John Ashbrook of Ohio would like to "see this misuse of tax money stopped. a For under the guise of scientific psychiatric child personality analysis school children all over the land are being asked not only the question quoted above, but many others of the same type. a For example, other questions are ''Which is more Important: taking the bath of allegiance to the United States or Joining a church?" And here Is another dilly being: asked, "Which la We r set denying the existence of God or lambing while the Star Spangled
Banner Is being played." a These programs, are all being carried out under the National Defense Education Act of 1958, Section V entitled "Guidance, Counseling: Identification and Encouragement of Able Students." a Thus according to the weird viewpoint of the weird minds In the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, the best way to determine able students Is to find If he would prefer to spit on a Bible or the American Flag. Presumably, If he expressed no preference, he goea down In the records as a backward student. It Is little wonder the nation's Independent businessmen, voting through the National Federation of Independent Business have consistently opposed more Federal spending on education. For who can tell what questions the Washington bureaucrats will dream up next to ask children. There are many possibilities such as "Would it be best to murder your mother with an axe or a shotgun?" Or perhaps something along this line would meet the approval of this scientific evaluation "Is It better to steal a car, or a diamond ring?" But perhaps this latest manifestation of national madness was but inevitable. ..a. For what mind, but that of bureaucrat, could ever dream up such a method of evaluating what children are mentally sound, and well adjusted. After all, a bureaucrat's standards are reached by comparing fellow bureaucrats.
