"You cannot have that, sir," replied the landlord. "That is being cooked for Mr. Scott, the traveler." "I know Mr. Scott very well," said the gentleman. "Is he stopping here?" "Oh. no, sir," answered the landlord. "Hut six months ago he ordered a fowl to be ready for him at precisely two o'clock today, and we are expecting him every minute." What He Wanted. Little lien, wiio was very fond of beefsteak, passed his plate the other night at dinner for a second helping. "Why, I5en," said his uncle, "you mustn't eat any more meat. j 1 1 FEED FOWLS SCRATCH GRA1IJ Prcper Amount Specified by SpeclaU Ist3 for Leghorns and General Purpose Breeds. (Frepared by the United States Department of Agriculture.) Specialists of the United States department of agriculture advise poultry keepers to feed about one quart of scratch grain and on equal weight of raash (about 1J,2 quarts) daily to 13 liens of the general purpose breeds, such as the Plymouth Rocks, Rhode Island Reds or Wyandottes, or about 16 hens of the smaller or egg breeds. This would be about 7 pounds each cf scratch grains and of mash daily to J Fowls Having Free Range Pick Up . Much cf Their Feed. 100 Leghorns and about O1 pounds of each to 100 general purpose fowls. If hens have free range or large yards containing green feed a general purpose hen will eat about 75 pounds of feed in a year, while a Leghorn will consume about 55 pounds in addition to the green stuff which she eats. trouiti d run umuaoi Many Diae&tive Troubles May Os Overcome by Purging or Cleansing the Intestines. CUBE FOB POULTRY DISEASES Use of Vaccine Has Considerable Value in Correcting Ailments, Says Professor Lewis. Trof. Harry R. Lewis of New Jersey college before a recent meeting at the Connecticut station said the use of vaccine In the cure of poultry diseases has considerable value. Profes sor Lewis told of trying out a vaccine on hens afflicted with chicken pox and roup and the successful results. He believes that other diseases may be treated by the vaccine plan. The next step at the New Jersey station will be an effort to immunize pullets against chicken pox or roup by vaccinating while young and before they have been exposed to the disease. r iiirnn iiiin niwTMiMwiniTnwiiiwrillllnTllMlWMWMiaMiMiil. a- ( I i h r t x U ! v 1 Watch your flock carefully and as soon as one member shows di-vase remove it. Old geese lay bolter than young geese and old ganders are better than young ones. The weather is something, but the hen is more. Have your hens in a laying condition and they will Jay in spite of weather. The dust bath is recommended highly for farm flocks but it should not be the only means of preventing lice as some birds will not dust, themselves thoroughly.
Physic-Inns claim that President IT'Ison is suffering from neurasthenia or nervous exhaustion. This, they claim, is the after e fleet of, an attack of Infiuenza which he had" last April, while he was in Paris attending the Peace
conference. There are hundreds of thousands of people today who are still suffering snrue bad effect from last year's attack of Influenza. Doctors are agreed that the Flu is corning back this Fall, and now that cooler weather Is here, they are afraid It will break out any time. Even if one recovers from the Flu, the after effects are terrible. The only' sane thing to do is to prevent the Flu. Influenza can be prevented ; last year's results prove that. As a preventive for Flu, Turpo has been a pronounced success. Turpo is an effective germicide, combining the old-fashioned remedies of turpentine (which has always been known as the best home germicide), camphor and menthol in a pure mineral base. These Ingredients have long been recognized as effective germicides, as well as having really wonderful qualities in relieving colds and congestions. Snuff a little Turpo up the nostrils several times a day. and the Flu germs will have little chance of getting a lodging and breeding place. Many physicians and hospitals use and recommend Turpo. The fact that there have been cases of "flu" already reported makes it Important that you prepare now. Buy a thirty cent jar of Turpo, while your druggist has a supply on hand, and use as directed. Last year druggists could not supply the demand. Remember that Turpo is a preventive, not a cure for influenza. Take care of yourself. Adv. Mysterious Theft of Diamonds. Precious tones, worth almost $."00,000, in transit between London and Ceylon, have disappeared. This is said to be the biggest robbery of Its kind between London and the Fast, though there have been many greater between other places. The famous pearl necklace case betwen London and Paris of a few- years ago, in which the pearls were replaced by lumps of sugar, involved an amount of $740,000. There is a remarkable resemblance between this case and that on the Nagoya, which, occurred last July. On that occasion diamonds worth $2"0.000 were stolen from the vessel in transit to India. There is only one way to cure Catarrhal Deafness, and that is by a constitutional remedy. HALL'S CATARRH MEDICINE acts through the Blood on the Mucous Surfaces of the System. Catarrhal Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this tube is inflamed you have a rumbling' sound or imperfect hearing-, anl when it is entirely cloaed. Deafness is the result. Unless the inflammation can be reduced audi this tube restored to its normal condition, hearinsr may be destroyed forever.
