TAMVEil A new tax lav? is now iu force. passage of the law was leeommeQded by Governor Goodrich, aod was pasaei Vy the Iat legialatuie. TftU new law required theTown&hip Assessor to agesa all property at full value. Taxpayers will remember when (be assessors called upon them lust spring thai they were required to list their property at a much higher value than had ever been done beiore. This wm not the fjnuSt of the Assessors. The new law required It to be done, and the ABseasora were eoxnpelled to make the increase. After the Assessors bad completed their work, all assessment lists were filed with the county Auditor, and be was required to place all the lists before the county board of review, and in order to equalize the asses amenta and make them uniform, many of the liata were still further increased. Tbia increase was net the fault of the board of review. The new tax law was the cause of the increase. Alter the county Board of Heview completed its work the Auditor certified the assessment to the state Board of Review, and by virtueof the new law, the State Board of Review made further increases, and an order h&a been sent to the Auditor by which the assessments of property in Jennings Co. are raised still higher. We ask the taxpayers to carefully read the order made at Indianapolis by which and under thia new law, their taxes will reach mountain heights, and in many instances more tax will be collected on the property than It can be sold for. Governor Goodrich made hi raea pledging th&t hia election and a legislature in harmony with him would re duce taxation and lessen expenditures. The Governor and the legislature made the increase as was shown in the papers throughout the county and state, which is from 30 to 40 per cent of an increase over the amount returned by the county board of review, They say if the assessment is increased then the levy can be reduced. With no desire to be offensive, we call attention to the fact that the levy for State Revenue, Benevolent Institution Funds, Educational Funds and all leviea mads by the legislature ha already been made, and the r&te for the coming two vearj remains the same as the past, and the legislature having adjourned these levies remain, and more than double the amount heretofore collected will be collected under the new law. k Hi Om The argument in the iajunct; against Clill'ord 11. Eon wajhti: fore Special Judge MayseofBcoti:'. in the Court House in Vernon V. 1 1 day, dept. luth 1919, and the caj t en under advisement until Moriu Sept. 15th 1919. The case was well threshed out '. the attorneys and it appeared that V defense made excusei In the i '.'ce t . reasons why therv should not be a temporary injunction. The attorneys for the defense ?em; t more interested In the content suit than they did the temporary injunction suit. Harry Meloy at the close of f- ? argument tried to inform the comi that he did not make a certain remaii about the decision so made by tl. : Judge John R. Carney as being mad 3 through ignorance, but was called by the persons attending court. Why is it that these men have no respect for the Court? We know that this man tried every way to defeat Carney when he was in the Primary and It can be said that he tried to dafait Carney in the election. Mr. Meloy openly and above board peddled it that Carney was not squall tied for the place and that he w&a biased End would not make & good Judgs. He has often tince made the remark that he would not let him try a case cf hia. The people of Ripley, Jennings &nd Sott Counties eay that he is alright and so expressed their feeling ia electing Mr. Carney. It appears that Harry C. Meloy is the only w ? man in the county, in fet he became to wise tht ha wants to take charge of matters and fee's lifcs ha can esy tnoai any insulting thin t he cares to. Tbe thing ihat hurts Mr. Meloy'a dignity is that he has to s&y "Your Honor " The ihing that hurts such men R3 Mfcloy after gettiog Bwelied up to the point that they are about ready to burst, and tueu have defeat put up to theai is, t bey explode, IsiL LLuuUm yJIiUUL Arrangements have been all but completed to transfer the Vernon School into the hands of the township trustee. The trustee is taking steps to organize the school wiih levy and teaching force. Iu all probability this year's senior class will be able to finish the yer'e work as graduates from a commissioned high school. It will depend upon the attitude and action cf the people of the town and township whether future classes will have thia privilege. The situation is not settled. The question for us to decide is, eh&ll we make the school what it ought to be and what it can be. It will take heroic effort ; but such edort iu the right direction will win School will likely begin Sept. 22, the same time 63 the country schools.
