iNcrth Vercoa led., Aug. 11, 1919. Mr. R. E. Oicott, City Clerk, North Vernon, Ind. Dear feir:- Not very long sines your letter was received informing me of my relief from the duties of City Engineer. Your letter coming so goon after the county treat election and containing the information that ray successor bad been appointed, waa certainly a token that my conduct in the recent election was not approved by the City Administration. Let me inform you that it v?&a not possible to bring myself to vote in any other way than I did at that election. Being a citizen of North Vernon and not indifferent to its vyelfare, I claim the right to act in all things pertaining to the welfare of the city and its interests according to my own judgment and not according to the judgment of its citizens. Your own reason must rule to the exclusion of all else. To vote according to the dictates of conscience and reason is the right of every American citizen. As a citizen of North Vernon I am as much interested inita welfare as
any one in the town. North Vernon should be one of the best places in the world in which to live and I would gladly work to make it a better place. Any one who has property here can increase the value of his property by improving it and by improving the morality and refinement of the town and bv driving out of the city every thing that degrades men and society. The worst enemies of North Vernon are these who violate the laws and permit the laws to be violated and who tolerate upon the streets of the city and within its confines gambling ami the operation of gambling devices. No friend of North Vernon would uphold any violation of law which would give the City a bad reputation. In the county eeat election I truly did what I thought was best for North Vernon and Jennings County, No one or any body of men has the right to dictate to n voter what he shall do in any election. If he does not see as others he should not be condemned. In the few years that your humble and unworthy servant has been here he has probably done as much for North Vernon as some of your other citizens. A residence that will probably endure for a few kcenturies has been built where a forest stood and be may render some assistance in the very near future in building another. If you wish to dispense with his services give back to him the small amount that he invested in the building occupied by the Reliance Manf. Co. You can relieve him of the duties of finanial Secretary of ilie fcirst M. E church, a position inat he did not re fuse to accept when no one seemed to want to be burdened with its duties. You can also get some one to pay the contribution pledged to the Centenary fund of the church. But you need not return any money to me. I am not asking for that and my contribution will be paid. In conclusion I will say that I consider myself a true friend of North Vernon and not antagonistic to it in any way however antagonistic I may be to some methods used in elections. I am a true friend even if I do not vote according to the dictates of some of its citizeus. I will further say that there are no regrets upon my part for any thing that I did to secure in North Vernon a fair eltciion. My only regret is that I was not prepared to do more. Not withstanding any thing that may be said my work was in behalf of the beet interests of the city . 1 expect to stay with you for a while yet and it is to be hoped that in the future you will be eonxiuced that I an -one of the bett friends that North Vernon has. Voxirs truly. Charles W. Miles. San Jacinto. 'oe Holmes entertained a lady friend from Hanover Haturday and Hunday. A large crowd attended services at Graham Sunday morning aud night. The Misses Carrie Livingood, Carrie Jackson and cousin from Anderson attended the ice cream eocial at Bntlerville Haturday night. Gladys Estell spent Monday afternoon with Lenora Holmes. Lenora Holmes has been on the sick list the past few days. An Evangelistic picnic was held in the grove at the Graham church Saturday afterncon. All reported a uice time. Mrs. Peter stine son George and wife of Greensburg spent a few days here with relatives and friends. Roland Stine wife ami little son of Marshall are visiting her parents Alvah Mills and wife.
