roaiis, organize aod through the Coun

ty Farmers Association ask and demand this ideal system of State ai.d County aud township 3 mile road law. No greater benefit could come to the county than to have this system of roads laid out and to be built as soon and as fast as the money is available. Several of the North Vernon removalists said they must get the county seat relocated now or never, to beat the farmers to their roads. Hence the calling of the relocation election, July l-J, By jumping into the election at this

time the reuiovalieta admit there wilt

not be enough money to build a new

County Library at North Vernon and a new Court House at North Vernon and at the same time secure the state highway reads commission which th Jennings Count v Farmers are entitled to. The name reinovalists believe the farmers will be bnay iu their harvest on July 22 aud will not come out to vole. But the farmers beat them in Bid; on their relocation proposition and they will beat them much worse July 22, 1919 on the same proposition. Moreover the roads will probably be dry and at their best on July 22, 1019 and the removaliets believe the Farmers will forget the bad and wornout roads of last winter and spring, and will not have the bad roads of last winter in mind July 22, 19B. In other words the removaHsts selected the best possible time for the North Vernon Law yers to pet in their licks on you, it being In vacation of the Ciicuit Couit of Jennings County and being harvest season, the worst time for the farmers. This arrangement for the election cu

July 22. lvli takes the advantsge of

the farmer. The North Vernon Lawyers and certain lemovalista are afraid of the Farmers' votes, because the

farmers' votes largely defeated the re-

mo alists in ltI3. So removaast-s do no try "to harness the msi&sea to keep the classes." To remove the couoty seat to North Vemou would be hardship to the taxpayers cf the county, as a new Court House would have to be erected. There seems to be no common tense reason for removing the county eeat to North Vernon. Vernon acd North Vernon corporation lines meet Vot-

ers and taxpayers should let well e-

cough alone. To remove the county's seat cf business wou'd be a crime upon the great tarjority cf taxpayers. Can our tsxpaye rs ftftard thk.' It should cot ba succciifal, as no one who knows the tUtistttca staukt

who know the region and are not

This is not meant for a reflection in

TAXPAYER Jlhl

Jim Huntington, County Sheiift'l

occupied a front page in the Plain!

Dealer advising the tax payers and

farmers of Jenning County what to do

on the Court house question.

I f it were not for this fact Jim would

require only passing notice but when

Jim seriously advises the tax payers and Farmers of the County what to

do on the uaoet imrjortant ouestion

that has ever iu its history confronted

the tax payers it is entirely proper to examine into his qualifications.

Now we refer to him as "Taxpayer

Jim'', not di account of the tax he

pays but rather the tax he does not

pay. The Couoty Treasurer's book

shows that tax payer Jim paid 07

for the year 1918. Iu l!H9 Jim gave all his worthy possessions in at a valuation $2o". notwithstanding the fact that Jim has drawn the salary of 1700.Cm) and the extras, as Sheriff for the past 2., yeats, and has lived in the Sheriff's

residence with light and heit furnished, and has auctioneered iu between times, aud has saved only $2t. Mr. Taxpayer, is Jim a safe adviser on a momentous tax question? And in this talk about a new Sheriff's residence and jail did it ever occur to you, Mr. Taxpayer, why the Sheriff should be furnished a tine residence with fuel aud light, and the other County officers who draw less salaries

ue compeuea to iurnisn tneirs; some day this graft will be eliminated tad

the tsx payers relieved of this burden. Did Taxpayer Jim mentioa the reat war debt of $3 , 177,000,000.00 that s unpaid, the new Library tax, IhelO cent State road tax, the extra 44,oUO.(H) the teachers will be paid annually more than ever they were paid before; Thst the bonded indebtdness for roads in the various townships in the county amounted to 1143,824 00 that there is nearly 1,000,000,00 dollars of a mortgage indebtedness in Jennings County that in

terest is paid on at an average of G per cent annum; that this will be the last year for the government to guarantee

prices on grain or any other farm pro

ducts, and the future prices will be un

certain: that crops might be a failure; that building material and . labor like all other things are highest in the history of our county; that a new acd

unnecessary Court house is not needed in Jennings County; that there never was a more uncertaiu and unsettled condition in the affairs of our county than at present? He evidently did forget this iu his speeches. But tax payer Jim is telling you that you will have to build a new Court house in Vernon or North Vernon and that it is only a matter of your Choice, can he make you beUeve that when you know the facts? Taxpayer Jim has been a house holder for the past 20 years and lived in f-everal kinds of houses but has never built a NEW HOUSE. Tax payer Jim has not farmed lately and does not know of the strife and toil it takes to pay interest and taxes. Now candidly what do you think of his advice? Why is he out? Is it a new form of auctioneering?

Jes-sph D. Cone and the late John Overmyer on October 1st. 1913 tinned ac'aff.davit alleging fraud in the East Precinct of Vernon Towcehip; in the West Precinct of Vernon Township, in

the Second Precinct of Geneva Township (South Western part of Geneva Township.) in Lovett Township and

in the south precinct of Bigger Town-shit..

Ytt North Vernon had a carnival during the election Sepleunler 22ud, 1913 and we are informed Increased the vote of Center Township from between three hundred to four hundred votes, by the boldest kind of fraud. Then the removalist. allege that the Good citizens of Lovett, Campbell, Bigger, Vernon and Geneva Township in substance are "Robbers". People in glass houses should not throw stones. It is like a thief calling an honest man a thief in order to cover his own crookedness. When Messrs. Joseph D Cone and late Hon. John Overmyer and Fred Lock wood were called before the

Grand Jury in October loi.i at the re

quest of the good people of Campbell, Bigger, Lovett, Geneva and Vernon

Township to prove their accusations they looked like wiped. The honest farmers counted a full and complete

investigation inese farmers were vindicated. The accusations against these good citi.ens of Bigger, Campbell

Vernon, Lovett and Geneva Town ships were false and untrue.

How could these removalists ask for

a contest when some of their number did such crooked work in Center

Township in 1913? People may for give but they can not forget.

A NUT FOR THE NORTH VERNON LAWYERS AND REMOVALISTS.

Mr. Lawyer and Kemovalist, will vou please explain to the tsxpayers of Jennings Co. whether a new and unnecessary court house will not increase the taxes of the farmers in the ont townships of the county, and will you also explain, if you please sir, whether the erection of a new and unnecessary court house will increase the value of the farms in the out townships such as Geneva, Spencer, Sand Creek' Columbia, Marion, Campbell, Bigger, Lovett, Montgomery or any other township. Now the fact is this, it's ROBING PETER TO PAY PAUL" and they can not say other wise, nor can they say that GOOD ROADS arid GOOD SCHOOL ARE NOTTIIINGH THAT ADVANCE THE VALUE OK THE FARMS. Mr. Farmer and tax payer if yon do

the estimated ost of anew Court

estimated by Harry Meloy to f G00. 000. 00

Suppose that we say that it wil

cost some half as much as the highest

estimate, ?3DO00dO .(. That amount is

not outside of the limit. It will be'

the fiueht Court house in the State of

Indiana and when the people of

Jennings County vote to relocate the

County seat, they vote to spend up to the limit. No promise has been made in regard to the amount to be spent so now may be sure that it will be enough. If a promise were made it

would be worthless.

Bonds will be issued t run for

twenty years bearing interest at the

rate of five per cent. The first pay

ment of interest on a loan of SSuoooo.OO

would be $15o00.00 and the last pay

ment would be 1750 00. The total

amount of interest paid would be ?lo"o00.00 making the total coet of a

Court house costing $300,000.00, $457oOO.

or nearly one half million dollars.

The whole amount of this large sum

r . iii -

oi money wuuiu ne taKeu from pro

duction capital. There is notafarm in

Jennings Ccnnty that dots not need to

be improved. The farms need to be

tiled, to have more fences and they

need the application of lime. But the

farmer, instead of using money to im

prove his farm, would be compelled to use it in paying for an ornament for North Vernon. The merchant instead of increasing his stock of goods

would help pay for an unnecessary Court house. The railroad instead of making necessary improvements would pay their part of the cost of an

ornment.

The building of roads would be affect

ed. On account of the burden of taxes the people would not build so many

roads. Taxpayers can not stand an unlimited amount.

The expenditure of any sum of

money uselessly would seriously retard the progress of Jennings County. Vote for the interests of Jennings County. Vote to build up the County districts, to improve your farm and do

not vote to throw your money iu an unnecessary court honse.

The contention that there is to be a new court house either at Vernon or

North Vernon is nothing but cam

paign talk. It is foolishness. After

you reject the proposition of the North

Vernon attorneys, if any one attempts to throw the money of the people away remember that the farmers have an

organization and any County official

who attempts to throw money away will hear from the farmers and all

other classes of people. There will be

no new Court house built at Vernon or any large amount spent in repair.

Taxes will be higher without the

building of a Court house. Because of the increased cost of every thing used the balance in the County treasury

iias uwinuiea rrom uouoo.uo until it is

now about ?30ooo.o and it will have

to be replenished. The State will now

get money from taxes on automobiles

that the County has been receiving

The roads must have more money for

repairing them. Roads are needed

everywiiere. Instead or spending $300, 000. 00 or any other amount for a Couri house spend it on the roads where it is badly needed where it will

do even North Vernon more good than

a Court house. The State Highway

commision does not intend to build a highway North and South through the county, so spend the money in buitdiug an improved County unit highway on the State Road where it would be a profitable Investment and through Lovett, Montgomery and Marion township and also through Sand Creek Columbia, aud Bigger Townships. It is not progressive to throw your resources away tut it is progressive to improve your farms aud roads. Therefore he progressive and vote against the proposition to destroy the resources of Jennings County by building a new Court house.
