Reaching the main building the flames spread at ctico to all parts of it and in a few brief moments the work of a Ufa time v.'as swept away, the inmates of the houhie barely escaping' with their lives, losing all their Sects. From the Albert House the fire was communicated to the building belonging to the Foster estate, occupied Jj$ our County Auditor, D. F. Stacker, and in a very few minutes it too vras reduced to ashes. Mr. Stacker however succeeded ia saving his household g'ood.s, although in a badly damaged condition. From hero the flames leaped to the elegant and handsome Foster residence, adjoining on the west and in a brief space of time it, too, had succumbed to the fiery monster, the occupants, Dr. Hon and Wm. P. Gab bert barely saving their heuseheld effects. The fire by this tima had gained such headway that all became convinced that the entire southwest corner of the public square would be swept away and the attention of those at work was turned to saving the moveables of those endangered. From the Foster residence the flame'? leaped the alley in the south west corner of the square and despite the heroic efforts of a brave few soon enveloped the building belonging; to Mr. John C. Albert, occupied as a residence by J. F, Collins and Geo. A. Busk irk, and by A. S. Fai sun as a barber shop. From here the fire spread to the large tws story framo adjoining on the north, owned by Wm. F. Mr. Albert's hair and whiskers "were' sing."l 'before he could escape, while Mr. C. C. Curry, who had 'but recently taken charge of the house, was badly burned about the head and face, Ja,esH Snider, who slept in the third story, barely escaped with his life. . When aroused he started lor the stairway, but a few. feet away, and before reaching it looked back and saw the Sanies rushing1 into the room he had just vacated. Wm. Tindall, wh also slept in the third story, found the stairway wrapped in flames, but knowing it was "'"instant death to remain or heal tale, dashed through and earaa out safely but singed. A young man named Bas5, in hiattempt to get out, got lost and run through a glass door opening out on the second story veranda, cutting lits legs and bo ly fright fully. After getting out on the veranda, his piteous appeals and cries for help attracted attention and he was enabled to eseape from his perilous situation by the aid of some timbers placed against the house. Others received slight burns and bruises, but luckily nothing more serious than those already mentioned. That the fire was the work of an incendiary, there is no doubt, and woe be unto the guity one if found out. The fire origu ited ia the watercloset of the Albert House, as hefare stated, antj when first discovered was but a mere blaze, but it scon increased and leaped along the lattice work connected with the main building with a speed that betokened a complete satura tion with coat oil. The fire. was first discovered by Geo. A.( Buskirk, who, with his wift, was occupying a rm in the second story and in the back part of the Albert House. It's wife was sick and he was up replenishing the fire in his ream when he discovered the flames and gave the alarm, barely in time for the inmates of the house to escape, he carrying his wife, both in their night-clothes, down stairs and out of the burning building. While all are lowers, Mr. Albert is the greatest sufferer, he losing every book, paper, deed, otc, that he had. - . In conclusion we will s xy that whil'3 a few cf our citi;c;::s workrd wtth a Zealand heroism that' can not be to highly praise;!, thers were numbers of sL-Ptart ycurg men who stood idly around, with Iw.r.Js in their pockets, complacently watching the wholesale destruction of property and not even liftirga finger to aid the smTareo.
