Sweet II j c and Cye. Four pimple, words, but how full of thought. They do not carry you bwck on memory's wings, to the days of your childhood, when life was to you only as a dream. No indeed. They take hold of you and crry you to the future;. to the great future you will enter when life's journey you have completed and ceased to be mortal, and have entered the land of song ai-d praiso Immanuel's bind the 'land that Is fairer than "day" and with faith in your heart you almost long for the time to come when you shall go through the gate that will be ajar for you, and in that "Sweet bye and bye" dwell forever with thosa who preceded you to that home of the blessed. But do the wards of this sweetest of songs always carry you that far in the future? They may not. Perhaps you think there can, and will, be a "Sweet bye and bye" yet on earth, when he who you have loved so well and tried s hard to raise to be a temperate man will leave the life of intemperance he has strayed with and will agaia be the darling boy you w-re so fond of; will again greet you as in the days ot long a:o,befo: e sin had crept in and defiled a life; will again be to his mother that joy that fills the heart to overflowing with happiness. The heme will again be happy. The tears that have been so often shed for that erring but fond boy will be changed to smiles, and then the greatest, perhaps, of your earthly troubles will be lifted away from you, and the "Sweet bye and bye" has come. Your child is not longer a drunkard. He who so strongly resembles you has ceased the ways that were fast carrying him uuhonored, unsung, and unwept to the grave, save by ysu, his mother. Intemperance will drive the father away from his son, but the mother seldom, if ever. It will be a glad time for you, and I venture the assertion that no joy will ever eclipse it, save when with He who doeth ail things well "you will stand in the sweet bye and bye," an unbroken family. Readers cf tha News, all over this fair land of ours to-day there are mothers . whose lives are fast fading into the grave on account of a son who has been 'tempted away from 'the right. Prowess of a Girl Hunter. fMcxJefito (Cat.) Tews. Miss Susie Jones, daughter of Captain Jones, a pioneer settler of the county, last week noticed that the dogs had "treed" some animal 11 tar the house, armed herself with a gun and proceeded to investigate the matter. No sooner had she approached the tree than a gigantic catamount sprung to the ground. The dogs followed in close pursuit, over '.angled weeds and through the dense willows and forest of- the Tuolumne for nearly a mile, when the animal again took to a tree for protection . Tho brav girl trudged on alon, with her gun osi her shoulder, and on coming up with the dogs soon discovered his catship in an unusually close proximity, but not daunted by his glaring eyes .and ferocious appearance, took deliberate aim and fired. The cat made a spring, but fell to the ground dead. Swinging the monster over her shsulder, she carried him home in triumph as a trophy of her prowess. A friend sent us the animal, and we found it to be one of the largest of his species. Tha young lady hunter has - only sen some fourteen or fifteen summers, and is a native of our county.
