Mr. Potter ah bided t the history connected with the formation of the Potter committee, and his refusal at that time to allow an amendment to the resolution ko that the Oregon ilispatchen should lie inquired into. He denied that he had ever been csjntndled by Tilden in any way. Mr. Hutler opposed the r solution. He "thought the House had no jurisdiction over the sub ject, and said it would be better to trive the $10,000 asked for to the families of poor men. instead of wastintr it in investigating private dispatches. Mr. Hale followed in a brief speech, earnestly advocating the investigation. He thouf-'ht it was due to the simple eld man in New York who was draped out aa a Democratic candidate, and whose pood name was imperiled by his trusted friends. Mr. Conner said that the Republicans came here in Deeeniber, expecting the Democracy to rush forward with a resolution for investigating, but he had been amazed at the long silence. The Republicans kept quiet, but it was hard work, and he was glad now, at this late hour, that Mr. Potter had been moved. Mr. Hewitt favored tthe resolution, saying that, as Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, he had never sent a dispatch which would not bear the light He never heard of these cipher dispatches until they were in print. The investigation was demanded by justice to an outraged leader of the Democratic party, and by the party itself. An investigation would vindicate Tilden from calumny heaped upon him by the Republicans. The resolution waa then adopted by a vote of 123 yeas to 120 nays. Mr. Ellis, of Louisiana, replied to Mr. Brag. He eairt the Southern people were as true to the Democratic party as the gentleman from Wisconsin (Bragg), and it was in obedience to Democratic teac hings, as the Southern people had understood them, that they had gone into the war. The estimate for the corresponding items in the United Kingdom is $2,000,000,000. Of private property in France a total is given of. $43,110,600,000, which, added to the public property, gives as the gross total of the capital value of all kinds of French wealth, public and private, $16,110,600,000, against a gross total for the United Kingdom of 12,500,000,000, from which it appears that France is the richest country by $3,610,000,000. It is noted that the value of realty in France far exceeds the value in England, while personalty in England is far more valuable than in France. In discussing the figures the Saturday Review points out that certain items as the value of highways ($1,523,000,000) are given in the French paper and not in the British; while it further thinks the French figures are exaggerated. It takes pains, however, to add, that when due allowance for exaggeration has been made, "it is evident that France is little behind this country for wealth." In the last ten years it appears that the wealth of France has increased $7,500,000,000, giving an annual increase of $750,000,000, so that the war indemnity amounted to no more that the savings of sixteen months. The present national debt of France, great as it is, according to these figures is only about one-seventh of her realized capital. " It might be doubled and yet would be proportionately lighter than the English debt the year after Waterloo; HO ir THE DEACOX KILLED A WILDCAT. An old but well-meaning deacon in the town of Mamakating recently captured and executed a favorite dog belonging to a neighbor, and which had been in tlie habit of paying him nightly visits. The owner of the dog, learning of its fate, asked the good man why lie did it. The deacon replied that he mistook it for a wildcat. The body of the dog, which was black, and resembled a wildcat about as much as it did a mule, was found tied to a bush where it had been shot. The old gentleman was asked why he tied it up, if he thought it was a wildcat, and replied that he tied it up because he was afraid of it. The interrogator remarked that hunters rarely tied wildcats up to shoot them, and then returned to his bereaved famiily. Monticello (X. Y.) Republican.
