Stephen Voorhees, for whom his fath.er was named, was a Revolutionary soldier under Washington, hiuI fought at Princeton, Monmouth and on other celebrated fields. Mr; Voorhecs' ancestor on his father's side came from Holland, and the original name was Van Voorhees. Jin passant, Mr. Voorhecs tires with indignation whenever anything is said to tho disparagement of the Hollanders, and he always dwells with enthusiasm upon tho valor and genius of the Dutch Republic. Mr. Voor he es mother, Rachel Elliott, was born in Baltimore county, Maryland. She is still living, and is a 'ady of superior natural endowments and great sensibility. Her people were originally fiom tho aorth of Ireland. She was married to Stephen Voorhees in 1821, ami D. W. Voorhecs was their, child. The subject of this sketch was reared on a farm about ten miles

fnn Covington, in Foun'ain county. There he remained and helpel to operate a laro farm, until he was sent to college in 1345. This farm-life of Mr. Voorhees has always been of great value to him in his public career, li has enabled him to get close to the hearts, of the people, and often in his political speeches, wdiile discoursing oa public affairs in a manner entirely satisfactory to the severest literary critics, he has given the most apt, witty and humorous illustrations from farm life, that made the sun-burned sons of toil feel that "Dan" was with them and of them. It was in 1SF that he entered college ut the Anbury University, at Greencastle, where he graduated in 1819. He married his wife in Greeneastle. Shortly niter he left college one f the Professors of the Institution, Prof. Lirabee, predicted that he would, one day, take rank with the first men of the Nation, Immediately after- leaving col-

iler" at Harper's Ferry, v a., m

which old John Brown, John E. C h k and others were concerned, and for which they were convicted and hanged in 1850, will always stand prominent in tho history of tho country. At that time the gifted and gallant Ashbel P, Willard was Governor of Indiana. He was the lion-hearted champion of the Indiana Democracy. With sorrow " and dismay his friends learned that John E. Cook was a brother of Gov. Willard's wife. Here was a seeming dilemma w ith noble Willard. He was not the man to turn his back on his brother or a friend. His first thought was ''Dan Voorhees." Mr. Voerhecs was in Vincennes, attending a law suit, but he came at once to Indianapolis when Willard sent for him. His friend advised him not to attempt to defend Coak, He answered: "I will defend my friend's brother without regard t consequences." He took the first train east. The result of the celebrated case is known to the publie. The trial was tho beginning of Mr. Voorhees' national reputation. His great speech in defense of Cook was the universal comment of the public at the time. He afterwards figured protni nently in other celebrated murder trials, namely: Mary Harris, in Washington City, for killing Adoniram J. Burroughs. The

tri d of Henry Crawford Black, Frederick City, Md., far killing the seducer of his sister. On this occasion the speech of Mr. Voorhees in defense of the brother had a powerful effect upon the jury, they returning a verdict of (,not guilt," five minutes after he had Conc!udtl his speech. From the sobriquet so general y applied to Mr. Voorhees of the "Tall Sycamore of the Wabash ," it will be understood that he is of high stature. He is six feet one inch tall, and weighs about. 200 pounds. He is of fair complex-' ion, has dark-gray hazal eyes, and carries himself very erect. He is indeed a man of commanding presence and great personal magnetism. He is no v, as ho has been sinco the days of Willard, the most popular Democrat in the State of Indiana. By his devotion to his party, and the services he has given to his country, he has fairly earned the great honor given him by the Fiftyfirst General Assembly of his Slate. That he may live long, and near his honors with credit to himself and his devoted constituents, is the earnest wish of his 225,00 ) friends in the Iloosier State. JffciTly elected Senators. Connecticut Orvillo II. Piatt, to succeed William II. Barnum. Fiitrula Wilkinson Call, to succeed Sinicn B. Conover. Illinois J.utm A.Logan, to sue-' cecal Richard J. Ojlesby. Indiana Daniel W.
