Delayed passengers at Evansville, from up the river, report the death, by mysterious agency, ot an old colored woman familiarly called "Aunt CelJa," who has lived in a little cabin near Scuffletown, tenie twenty miles above Evansville, since the memory of the oldest inhabitants of that neighborhood. Oldest people thereabouts ay she was an old woman when they were children, and by computation bused on cstimatns, her age was placed at 119 year. She was last seen last Friday, near dark, going Into a cabin with a rail for firewood. The next morning the cabin was burned down and the- body of Aunt Celia was discovered lying almost naked in the snow, a few feet from the door. She was frozen and slightly, but not badly, burned. Sho was very infirm, and her face, wrinkled and dry, Hkq parchment, bore little trace of human resemblance. Whether she died from exposure or from burning could not be ascertained. She hatt long been supported by the charity of the neighbors. A law suit, ox ten-! v.ily discussed in Rush and Shelby counties, is now progressing at Rushville, in tho Rush Circuit Court. Late one night in September, 1877, an unknown burglar entered the residence of William Bo'ing, an aged and wealthy man living in the southwestern part of ilu-h county, near the She' by line. Presenting a cocked revolver at the head of the old man, ha compel!?,! him to march through the house and point out the places where tho money and valuables were concealed. Death has been busy during the hist lew we cks with (' ngrt ssmea in Washington ( ity. In lesjlhan Amr weeks four ff them have died, and
all of them Democrats. Another one, Representative Tliornburg, ofTesinesee, lies at the point of ' death with a very eriou3 attack of pneumonia. Then ryument of Senatot Vo rhees that the trade dollar shoald be recoined as speedily as possible Into th srand.ird silver dollar accords with the general sentiment of the people. It is the plain duty of the Government which fath

Senator Davis, of West Virginia has progressed far enough in his investigation of tho crooked Republican book-keeping in the Tn usury Department to which reference has frequently been made by the -Couri r-Journa!, to have the testimony printed, and it is said to fully sustain the Senator's charges of false balances, erasures, and fraudulent public debt statements, which have been so derided by the Republican organs. The work of overhauling the books
hrt'i been done in the face of great obstacles, interposed by the "watch dog of the Treasury." The tinkering of the hooks took place under George Boutwell's direction, and undoubtedly many stupendous frauds have been perpetrated. Co i trier-Jo urn a I.
IsiutXAroMi, Ixn , Jan. 1:1, Ih-79. Ed. News; The House of Representatives convened to day at 2 oclock P. M., after which your Joint Representative from Oange and Crawford, Mr. Stucker, pres.m ted one of the most important bills that has beti brought before the House. Tha bill proposes to abolish the office of County Superintendent of Schools, and provides for the appointment of County S.-hoal examiner in lieu thereof. Mr. Stucker is an untiring worker and deserves credit for the manner in which he introduces his bills. He is always found in his seat, ready (or business. Orange county may well be proud of sandiugsucha man to represent them
in tho General Assembly of Indiana. Several other bills and resolutions were introduced by Mr. Stucker, which, perhaps, will pass the House. Modoc.
The Republicans are going to try to seat Ku klux Corbin in SenJ ator Butler's seat by means of Sharon's vte. Sharon has been brought to Washington from San Francisco for the special purpose
of voting and making a tia on the
seating of Corbin, which will ba decided by tho vote of Vice President Wheeler who will of course vote for the seating of the corrupt carpet baggei. The constitutionality of the Vice President voting for the admission of a Senator ha3 been strongly contested by Democrats, and Senator Eaton has already given notice that on March 4th, he will move to declare any seat vacant whose occupant has

More trouble has resulted from the pernicious habit of keeping a diary. A young woman in Snyder county, Penn., kept one, and she jottod down in big letters and with much underscoring such notes i3 these: "Went riding with Mr. Peterkin; Iiq kissed me a good deal." On another day, "Mr. Judkius went home with me from evening service; he hugged me for a quarter of an hour at the front gate," and there are an endless number of sensational entries of this kind, until one would suppose the kissing and hugging would have hecome monotonous to this young woman; nd no doubt they would, but the recorded facts are that no one man seems to have had a monopoly of either branch of the business. As this young lady was the cenceded belle of the village, and dangerously ssnart and handsome, it was not a very strange sort of thing so far as the man was concerned, and it probably never would havagitated the community had Mr. Peterkin and Mr. Judkins, and all the other fellows, been single men. But they were not, and a great fleal of domestic uuhappiness has resulted from the indiscretion of the young woman, who couldn't lesist the temptation to set down her victories in a book and then put the book where somebody could get it. Tho girl died, and that is how the diary was found. And the query arises, was it tho hugging and kissing that killed her?
