They talked together as man and wife would, and pretty soon the woman saw something in a showease to interest her. Her eilows were placet! on the glass, and there was a crash which startled everybody in the store. The husband took in the situation at a glance, and remarked as he ma do for the door: "Well, I guess I wont buy to-day, as I'm in a hurry." The wife started to follow, but the merchant called to her, and she in turn called to her husband, who paid not the ! least attention. One day, TvLen he came Lome in one of his worst moods, and was preparing to demolish her new hat, which she had carelessly left in -his way, she said to Lira, in a very chum-like fashion : " Now, Hal, I have been getting me some good bourbon, so let's get drunk together and have a glorious spree." Hal forgot about the hat, and, looking at his wife with, apparently, a f. cling of utter contempt and astonishment, he replied : " Kit, I will see yon in tophet first." But, a moment later, his appetite getting master of his better judgment, he took the glass sbe handed him, swallowing the entire contents at a draught. His wife also drank the contents of the other glass ; but, luckily for her, it was an entirely different mixture. In a few minutes Hal was dozing, and continued to doze the greater part of the time for two days. The glass, with additions to the narcotic fluid, was kept within his reach, and, whenever he awoke, he availed himself of it. He ate little during the time, although the most inviting viands were beside him. Mrs. McDermer was greatly pleased with the result of the experiment, and concluded to try it again whenever Hal became boisterous and unmanageable. Such peace and quiet she had" not known in two whole years as reigned in her household those two clays. At the enel of that period he recovered his senses, and his wife was rejoiced to see Mm in a more quiet, submissive state of mind than heretofore. But, in a few days, he was a greater fiend than ever. She again placed the drugged liquor in Lis way, and he drank with the same result. After a while it told fearfully on his health. This distressed Mrs. McDermer, but the distracted creature reasoned with herself in this way : "I have my little ones to support as well as myself and Hal, and I must have time in which to do it. He does not in his stupor interfere with and annoy me as he does in his drunken frolics; and, if he has got to die in consequence of either, it will be little matter which brings him to his end." Others noticed the stupid condition into which he had fallen, but troubled themselves little about it, thinking he was of little or no consequence, any way. But at length Hal found out the cause of his comatose condition by the discovery of drugs in his liquor. Then, with the fiercest imprecations, and club in hand, he confronted his wife. While she was pleading for pardon he dealt her a fatal blow. The poor woman fell at his feet a corpse. Yfhile he was in the act of striking her, a neighbor entered the room. In a few minutes Hal waa in charge of the police, who conducted him to the city prison. A few day later he waa tried for Ms life, and condemned the sentence of the Judge being that he, ' Hal . Then let loose a fierce bull-dog inside of the railings, and put up several notices relative to spring-guns and deadly mantraps ; and then keep your eye on those peaches day and night, and night and day, until they are quite ripe. This will be found to be the only way of preserving peaches. To make an apple tart: First procure your apple, which should bo as unripe a one as you can get. Then wash Mm all over with care and cold xvater. Then set him np upon a clean dish. Then get a sharp knife. Then peel him considerately, calmly, but conscientiously. Then place him gently in a small basin. Then take the juice of twelve lemons; add to this one pint of the strongest malt vinegar. Mix well, and" pour carefully over that appte until he is covered well over with the same. Then let him soak for six hours. Then take him out, and serve with a little fresh lemon juice and Cayenne. Something like an apple tart. ; A ItAXCJTXG IDIOT. Ten years ago the wif e of a well-to-do contractor of this city attended a ball, on wMch occasion she danced to excess. Soon after she gave birth to an idiot son, who in due time was consigned to the poor-house. Ever since the boy has been able to stand he has been going through the motions of a crude waltz. In his waking hours he is never still a moment, but is continually whirling round and round, or shufiling along the floor, keeping time to silent music xvith Ms arms, head and body.
