Springfield Union. Fightiko the Fhylloxeka. American Cultivator. Cor Foddek. "Where is the necessity of allowing corn to remain in shocks .until the middle or end of November? asks the German town Telegraph. Com should not be cut down until the stalks are dying and the grain ia pretty hard, and then it should remain no longer ia the field than is absolutely necessary for the drying of the grain. It should be husked aa early as possible, and the fodder tied up in bundles, and either . carefully stacked near the cattle stables or put under shelter in sheds. Heeduso Bm ix Frcit. The Fruit Recorder says: To raise gooseberries, currants, or any other of the small-fruit family from seed, make a low frame like a hot-bed - frame, 11 it up r with rich earth to within a few inches of the top, and on this put about one inch of clear Band, and sow seed on this. Sprinkle sand over the seed, and keep it watered sufficiently to keep the surface just moist, but not too wet. In a few days the peed will germinate, and when plants get so large as to crowd they may be transplanted. KEEPixa FKurr. The conditions required are a uniform temperature, as low aa may be without freezing, and dryness The cellar of the house should not be used for storing large quantities of fruit if it can be avoided, and if used there should be ample ventilation to carry off the carbonic acid given off by the fruit ripening. The temperature of 35 to 40 degrees is best, and when the thermometer shows above 40 degrees, the outer air, if colder, should be admitted. Apples, properly picked aud barreled, need not be disturbed until wanted for ise or side. Store pears in boxes or drawers, where they mny be occasionally inspected, as they often ripen unevenly. We m tern Rural. Bone Meal for Swine. The Indiana Tanner says that most farmers have noticed that in fattening swine, especially where they are crowded rapidly, they always appear weak in their hind legs, and sometimes lose the use of them entirely. An intelligent farmer says that lie and his neighbors have made a practice of feeding bone meal in such cases, and find that a small quantity mixed with the daily feed will prevent any weakness, and strengthen the animals so .as to admit of most rapidforcing. As bone meal is known to be a preventive of cripple-ail and weakness in cows, it looks reasonable that it should also be a benefit to hogs, which are often confined to a diet containing but little or no bone-making material. Bermuda. Geass. Bermuda grass may be easily killed upon uplands by plowing a light, Cat furrow, so as to turn the roots of the grass upward, late m the fall. Two seasons in corn or cotton will kill every vestige of it, if the ground is only kept clean, and what grass may appear turned up to the hot siin. But as this grass makes one of the best pastures for the South, and one of the best pods to plow under as a fertilizer for cotton, it is sometimes better to encourage than to destroy it. In addition to its value as a pasture grass, it makes excellent hay in places where few other grasses thrive. Upon low, moist ground it ia impossible to eradicate it, but such places are worth much more for hay than for any other purpose. Exchange. The Boston Commercial Bulletin, reminding its readers that the next few weeks give the best season of the year to " plant fences," supplies some very remarkable figures as to the use of wire fence, and especially of the Barb Fence of the Washburn A Moen Manufacturing Company.
