Best fresh butter contains 82.6 per cent, fat, 1.1 of salt, and 16.3 of -water, with a trace of organic matter. Lowpriced betters are sometimes found to be adulterated with large quantities of salt and water. Make & calculation as to how much corn and other grain crops you will require, raise good crops, and you will soon see the folly of using three to five acres to pasture a cow when she can be soiled on a half acre. Soils in cultivation require constant stirring, then they do not harden on the surface, and do not become too compact for the proper admission of air, rain and heat, and for the free growth of the fibrous roots. The farmer who keeps all the stock his farm will safely carry and "feeds them fat," eoon has fat acres, even if they were not originally so, from the manure returned to the soil. And the fatter the cattle are made the better the soil will become. So fat cattle make fat farmers. The calla lily blooms at three years. Take an ordinary earthen jar, without a ' hole in the bottom, put the lily in, and fill the jar three-quarters full of rich earth ; fill with warm water in which you have put a few drojss of ammonia ; keep in a warm room ; give as much light and sun as possible, and plenty of water. Chicago Tribune. M. Malleval recommends that seed potatoes whole tubers or cuttings be steeped in a solution of two pounds of quick-lime, the same amount of sulphur, and five qtxarts of water; thus treated his potatoes have escaped disease, while seed not so prepared, and planted side by side, produced ever an affected crop. Paris letter to New England Farmer. Sponge is an expensive article in the stable, for when constantly in use it soon decays. To employ it to the best advantage a double supply should be always on hand, one being in use for a week, and then put by to dry for a similar period. In this way a soft, flabby and nearly worn-out sponge recovers its texture, while sponge treated on this plan will last fully three times as long as if it is constantly wet from first to last. The practice followed by many persons of tightly tying up half-hardy roses and other plants for the winter is not to be recommended in fact ought to be abandoned. It shuts out the air, and in the event of a mild or moist winter they will be smothered, or killed with mold. There is no way positively safe but to lay these half-hardy things down and cover with a few inches of earth. Use a forked stick to keep them in place if needed, and see how fresh and green to the very tips they will come out in the spring. Of course, if roses, they should be pruned before laying down. Germantoicn Telegraph. Most farmers, and other persons, take as much delight in destroying bumblebees and their nests as in killing a snake, as if these bees were injurious. This is a great mistake. They and their nests should be held in respect as much as the honey-bee, for without the bumblebee we should have no red clover. The honey-bee, if we except the Italian, cannot reach down the tube of the red clover to get the honey, hence clover seed can only be obtained from the second crop, which blossoms after the bumblebee becomes active. This bee, in reaching for the honey, rubs the pollen from the pistil of the plants, and thus fertilizes the blossom. Mice destroy large numbers of bumblebees in cold weather. Therefore, cats and owls, by killing the mice, become the farmer's true friends, even if they do occasionally feast upon a chicken. Fanner and Fruit Grower. JMirwtie Economy. Fried Geeen Tomatoes. ACIIOSS THE CUAXXEL. The channel from France to England has been crossed upon a "podoscaphe" (water boots), by T. Fowler, an American, residing at Bordeaux. He started from Bologne at 4 o'clock on Monday, and arrived at Sandgate, near Folkstone, at 3 :35 in the afternoon, after a journey of nearly twelve hours' " duration, without having rested throughout the passage. A great part of the time he had to struggle against the wind, the lumpy sea and the strong currents of the channel. He was very tired, especially in the legs. The only nourishment he was able to take during the voyage was a small piece of bread and coffee. This is the first time that so long a passage has been made upon so small a vessel. The hardy navigator met with many ships, pilot-boats and fishing-boats, which greeted him with cheers; they were wholly taken with surprise at seeing a man who seemed to be walking upon the water. Fowler is decorated with the Legion of Honor for services rendered to France during the last war. He is the owner of a yacht, Peau Bouge (formerly Challenge), so often a winner in England and France. His podoscaphe is composed of two tubes, six metres (about twenty feet) in length. Each tube is thirty centimetres (about a foot) in height by twenty centimetres (eight inches) in breadth. The Field. A congress, probably unique in its kind, has been held in the town of Obrero, in Sweden, and was attended by a large number of the chimney sweepers of that country. The meeting was opened with psalm singing and prayers, and the debates touched upon the moral and social improvements which it would be desirable to have introduceel among the chimney sweepers. From AeuUf to jironic Is an easy stage ia cases of dyspepsia. A slight attack of indigestion, especially when there is a predisposition to digestive weakness of the .stomach, must speedily culminate in the more obstinate form of the disease. It is well, therefore, to adopt preventive measures early. Although Hostetter' Stomach Bitter overcomes, if persisted in, cases of dyspepsia of long standing, it is obviously the part of wisdom to use it ere the malady assnmes a chronic phase. This is particularly true, because as dvspepsia advances it engenders other bodily evll3, such as disorders of the liver, constipation or undue looseness of the bowels, nervous disorders, hypochondria, sleeplessness. These maladies are both prevented and remedied by the Bitters, but how much better to check them in their outset with the great aerative than to wait until they establish a inner foothold in the system. Surely tho idvisability of this must be apparent.
