Hogs can be grown so quick and rapidly increased there is scarce time for hoj cLoIcra. Good liogs are nenv jiroduced in eight months. Teach the boys to love tlie farm, but do not prove bard task-makers. Do not make their farm life one of .drudgery and toil, if you would have their thoughts in after life turn lovingly to their old homes and happy young lives. The Liondon Farmers'' Chronicle thinks that we require to protect the feet of our horses something after the manner Ve protect our own, and one vrould suppose that the matter of fitting a boot to the foot and leg of the carthorse ought not to be attended with any insuperable difficulty. How do you know a good farmer? It is by a well-ordered farm, well-chosen stock, comfortable buildings, a neat and thrifty garden, a well-rounded roadway, gates well bun, fences in good repair, shade trees and ornamental shrubbery well arranged, buildings painted without and whitewashed within, tools and implements painted and protected, and all the family cheerfuL Ventilation of the ben houses is an important thing to be observed by fowl growers at all seasons of the year, and especially in the months when the birds are; limited to. in-door confinement. Foil air in the bouses will generate dis ease rapidly. Eoup is thus caused, and sickness will surely crop out among the flock if they do not get fresh air, and plenty of it, fit any time of the year. " Machinery on the farm means a good deal," remarks the Scientific JFarmer. "It means that the farmer lias invested much capital in a way that is saving him mt ich hard work. It means hort days for you and the hired man. It means going to bed later and getting up later. It means less weariI ness and more opportunity for mindculture. Thus progress in agriculture not only niearys more and cheaper food and clothing, but it means greater "opportunity for development of manhood. Xet us welcome it, then, for the stomach's sake, the body's sake, and the mind's." Senator Blaine says that the farmers of the republic will control its destiny. Agriculture furnishes the conservative element in society, and, in the end, is the guiding, restraining, controlling force in government. Against storms of popular fury ; against frenzied madness that seeks collision with established order ; against theories of administration that have drenched other lands iu blood ; against the spirit of anarchy that would sweep away the landmarks and safeguards of Christian society and republican government, the farmers of the United States will stand as the shield and the bulwark themselves the willing subjects of the law, and therefore its safest and strongest administrators. We can see some pleasure, if no reason, in the convening of a bal-v jjliow, but we confess we could never see the slightest cause, reasonable or otherwie, for a fat men's convention,, unless it be the fact that misery loves company. For fifty or a hundred men, whose several weights range from two hundred to- three hundred pounds, to hold a convention simply because of so much surplus avoirdupois, is absurd to say the least It becomes doubly so when we rerlect that obesity is a disease. What would we think of as many persons emaciated by consumption holding a convention to compare their relative weights There is but one ground upon which we would advocate another fat men's convention, and that is that they will meet to discuss the merits of Allan's Anti-Fat, tlie only known remedy for obesity.
