This daughter also mar ried at the age of 12, and gave birth to a child before she reached 13. Thus EaJy Child became a grandmother before 27. Those of the ancients who did not believe in the sphericity of the earth thought it cylinder or an extended plane. Homer made it circular and the outside water, and this was the idea of the Jews. The later Greeks, from Pythagoras and Thales, taught the sphericity. But the Popes believed it a plane, giving all to the west to the Kings of Spain. The Spanish Armada, for invading England in 1588. consisted of 130 ships, of which 100 were larger than any before built. It conveyed 19,295 soldiers, 10,500 seamen and 2,630 brass cannon. They were to convey an army of 34,000 men from the Scheldt, in flat-vottom boats. The English opposing fleet, of smaller vessels, was about 101 ships. The Armada returned by the Shetland islands, and not more than half reached the Spanish ports. Ik 1782, Dr. James Price, of Guil ford, pretended to have discovered the philosopher's stone, and published an account of his experiments, but, being a fellow of the Royal Society, he was required, on pain of exclusion, to repeat his experiments before Messrs. CATC II IX G SARDIXES. The sardine fisheries have supported many families for generations. The chief supply originally came from off Sardinia, whence they take their name, but for a long time they were mainly caught on the coast of Brittany. Sardines are unusually abundant in French waters this season, and the catch will be larger than in any previous year. A sardine fleet consists of vessels from eight to ten tons each, with a crew of from six to twelve persons, and goes six to nine miles from land. The bait, consisting of egs pnd fish, cut up, is scattered on tha water. The sardines are taken with gill nets. A few are salted on board, but the bulk are e juried on shore. Tfaeii heads are cut off, and they are well washed and sprinkled with salt. After drying they aro arranged in frames, in almost perpen3icu!ir rovra, and immersed again and again in the best boiling olive oil. When salSeiently cured they are . packed in the small tin boxes by women and children, after which men fi'l tiis boxes up with fresh oil and solder them tight. The work is not complete, however, for before fit fox table the fish require cooking. A Gesiian journal recommends ridding damp cellars of mold and all fungus growth by burning in them, once in two or threo months, some "stick-sulphur," all doors being closely shut during the two or three hours while the fumes are doing their cleansing work. "Rtjkax,, jr.," thinks it about time everybody knew that "bees are deaf as a post," and that the beating of all the tin pans in two counties would not restrain a departing swarm. His way is to throw among the flying mass water, or the sun's rays, by means of a mirror. The latter plan he has never, known to fail. Good authority asserts that one pound of beans will support life in action as long as four pounds of rice. Two pounds of bean3 will help to do more muscular work than three pounds of wheat. The reason why beans require stronger powers of digestion than wheat is that they contain casein instead of gluten. It is best not to allow too many suckers or side plants on a calla lily to grow. Sometimes this plant shows a disposition to throw up a great number of little sprouts. These are best taken off, leaving from four to six strong ones, according to the size of the pot; six would be enough for an eight-inch pot. Gardener's Monthly. In oxen the stomach weighs fifty-one ounces for every 100 pounds of live weight; in sheep it weighs thirty-nine ounces, in pigs fourteen ounces, while in man only six ounces. These facts are important as showing the greater necessity for concentrated food in some cases than in others. The human race requires a mixed diet of meat and vegetables. Water which is collected in shallew wells should never be used in places that are thickly populated or highly manured, for water is rendered impure by tho decaying animal and vegetable substances in the soil, and becomes very unwholesome. When shallow wells are situated near drains or cesspools, the water becomes quite poisonous, and gives rise to cholera, fevers, and other fatal diseases. Water from deep wells is generally free from any decaying vegetable matter or drainage, and is wholesome as a beverage, although frequently excessively hard. A Goon Cow. A cow is in her prime at from 4 to 6 years, and the best paying time to buy is just after the birth of her second or third calf. The skin should be soft and mellow, not rough and " staring." There should be symmetry, fullness and softness of the udder, which should be broad, well spread out, pro. jesting behind the legs, aj.d also reaching unJer the belly. There should be a softness and thinness to the touch, and an absence of fleshiness and thickness. If one tent is wanting, about a fourth les3 milk will be the result. A cow's udder is nor, as some suppose, a barrel with four taps, but is divided into four compartments, called " milk glands," each of which has its own tap or teat. It is not only important that the full number of teats be present and in working order, but it is desirable that they be well placed, not crowded together, but far and xmiiorraly rpaxt; rather long and tapering; all pointingout and clown-ward,-equal in size and even in appearance. Docility and quietness of disposition are indicated by large, mild, and and clear eyes, and an air cf contentment generally. A cow that ia quiet and contented fee is at case, chews her cud with entire satisfaction, and will secrete and yi-ld more milk than any restless and turbulent animal, having similar milking charrcteristies in other respects. To purify and sweeten a fetid atmosphere immediately dip a cloth in the liquid and hang it up in the apartment. IX A. Ii E Fill G Eli .1 TO It. Chris Larsen's little son was playing around a refrigerator, the other day, and got into it for fun, when the door swung shut and the fun was over. The boy could not get out, for the lock lias the knob on the outside, and the best thing to do was to shout for help, which the little fellow did with all his might. But no help came, and, after calling and crying .until he was tired out, he laid down in the ice-box for a while, and thought he would call no more until he heard some one about ; still no one came, and the time seemed long, and the cold was growing more severe. At last the child believed he should die unless he soon had help, and he thought the only thing he could do was to pray for help to come. So he managed to get upon his knees, and, after saying the Lord's Prayer, prayed that some one would let. him out right away. After praying, he began to call and cry again, and a lady going by there heard him, and rescued him from what was fast becoming a perilous position. Mondout (N. Y.) Courier. a mash:. So inscrutable may the human face become that frequently it is but a mask which conceals the real character. The men and women most famous for heartless cruelty have often been celebrated for their handsome faces ; writers of fiction have not. been unmindful of the fact, and Faust is represented as being a handsome man ; while the German fishermen sing of the sirens who drag men's souls down to perdition with their fatal dower of beauty. Some faces are unreadable, and tell nothing of the owner's character. The merriest men now and then have sclemn faces, and ihe most serious frequently have cheerful ones. Frequently the most heartless coquette has all the shy graces of a girl of 16, while the heart of some woman who looks through you with ccld, steady eyes may be filled with love and tenderness that you are too blind to discover. So wo all go on, wearing disguises of diSerent device, never quite concealing, never revealing, the life within. And thus it will ever be. HOUSES MA TIX GF DIRT. A writer in Science Gossip observes that all grszmg animals eat a great quantity of earth. Eaith seems comfortable to their insides, and it is cer tain that they enjoy it. He used h ride a horse, he says, which, being regularly fed on hay and corn and not turned oat to grass, pined for a little' dirt. "Find ing out this I sometimes let him go to a hedge-bank, slackened the rein and watched him scoop out with his tongue earth enough to till a pint pot Thi, I think, is the reason why a horse so often stirs up the mud in a pond with his hoof before drinking. - llany horses will paw the water even when passing a clear stream, giving their riders the feur that they want to lie down in it." Thi; problem of co-ed acation cf the races has been successfully solved at Berea College, in Central Kentucky, which is attended by white students of all classes, who mingle with colored students without the least display of race feeling.
