The arrival of Indian Cotomisriioacr Uayt, and opening of the safe tuider Li a direction, have revealed a system of fraad and prander fully equaling all that had been reported in connection wiih the adirnn'wtraiion of affairs at many of the Sioux agencies. By the confession of the Secretary of the bank it eeema that for several years he wa-a in the habit of baying securities and charging them on. the books at higher rates than were actually paid, the difference being divided up aaiong the Trustee?. John Gibbons, a Stollle Magn.ire, convicted of the attempted assassination of William .Thonias, at Mahoney City, has escaped from the Schuylkill county (Pa.) jaiL GEXEliAZ,. The weather was decidedly tropical at St. Louies last week, mercury ranging from SO to ICO deg. in the shade for four days. Friday sixteen deaths from sunstroke were reported, and twenty-two burial permits were issued for that cause alone in three days. Saturday of last week twenty deaths occurred from sunstroke. O'Leary, the pedestrian, was beaten in a recent 275-mile walk giving odds of twentyfive miles by a walker named Sehmael, at Chicago last week. He has been challenged for the championship medal, probably by Vati -ban. . .. P.. ;t!.3 are received of hard fighting between Gem Miles and the hostile Bannocks and their allies on the 13th inst. near "Weston, Idaho. The Indians were 500 strong. It seems to be settled that ttie Sioux tribes under Rea Cloud, Spotted Tail, etc., are to have their own way in the choice of a new reservation. The site selected for them on the Missouri river is not agreeable to their tastes, and, acting upon the promise by the Government that they would not be coerced against their choice, they have fixed upon the White Gay creek region, over 200 miles from the Missouri river, as their future home. The condition of St. Louis and vicinity in consequence of the awful heat assumed the proportions of a most terrible calamity. July 15 was the hottest day ever known in St. Louis, producing fatal results without parallel from a similar cause in any city in America. To say that business was completely paralyzed is but to state the actual truth. People were afraid to venture in the glare of the cruel sun, an iadui-try and commerce were brought to a standstill. Upward of 150 cases of prostration by sunstroke, all adults, were treated at the public medical offices, and tko list of deaths for the day from this cause reaches the appalling total of forty-nine. These figures do not include cases, fatal and otherwise, which, occurring in the outer portions of the city, were not treated at the central sanitariums provided for the emergency, nor have reports been received of deaths other than those registered at the Morgue. ' Judge Rogers, of a Chicago court, has made an announcement of special interest to business men. A young man having asked to be excused from jury service in a murder trial through fear that ho would lose his position if he served, tbe court declared that he would fine and imprison for contempt any person who should dischargo an employe for such a reason. ' Col. Miles' fight with the savages a few days since, near the Umatilla Reservation, resulted in a decisive victory for the troops. The same ofdeer has, since then, led his men against the same band largely reinforced, and the Indians have been a secsnd time severely punished. They have now taken refuge in the foot-hills near the scene of the last battle, and are surrounded by the troops, who have re ceived considerable accessions to their num bers. The boiler in Davis' planing mill, at Birnesville, Ohio, exploded the other clay, destroying ttieeutLro building and k ill 10 g three persons on! right. Three more were fatally and sever-1 badly injured. The 1 iss is ahoct 125,000. The statno of Douglas was unveiled at the monument in Chicago, oa the 17th inst , in the presence of a large number of Illinois celeb rities. The St, Louis Republican of the 10th inst., gives a c miplete list of the fatal cases of sunbtrx ke ia that citv during the previous week. KEErrso Bctter. To keep butter in sacks, thc.e, when filled, should not be packed in dry gait, as the air can then have acces3 to the butter, the dry salt bein porous. If the sacks are packed in brine in a barrel, end headed up, the butter will keep for a year of more, if it tecs good when packed. American Ag riculturist. The water yonr fowls drink should never be exposed to the sun's rays. Set the vessel or fountain in the shadow of the fence or house, or place directly over it a broad dielf or board, upon four legs, like a wide "wash-bench." This keeps the watdr comparatively cool and fresh during the warmest days. Poultry World. The roots of clover have a natural tendency to decompose after having produced the plant in perfection, and it is the effect of this decomposition that renders a crop of clover bo good a prepara tion for the growth of wheat. Decay ever furnishes regenerative food, while the roots pierce and divide the soil, loos ening the ground. Foixowixa is The Golden little's "quick, cheap and perfect protection" against the striped bug, the saddest of the year: "Wind a newspaper around four stakes a foot high, one at each corner of the hill, making a box open at the top and' tight at the bottom by dirt heaped on the paper." A wooden box, of the proper dimensions, without bottom or top, would be equally effective, and if sheltered when not in use would last a lifetime. Press it over the melon, cu cumber or squash hill after planting, and if covered with a pane of glass the seeds will sprout the sooner. How to Choosh an Ox. The signs of a good working ox are long head, broad and level between the eyes, and eyes full, keen and pleasant, forward legs straight; toes straight forward; hoofs broad, not peaked, and the distance short between tho ankle and the knee (these properties enable an ox to travel on hard roads, for if the animal turns his toe3 out the strain comes on the inside claw, and when traveling on hard ground ho will get lame at the joint between the hoofs and the hair); full breast; straight back; round ribs, projecting out as wide as the hip bones. These are signs of strength and good constitution. The best colors are brown, dark red and brindle. At 4 years of age the steer becomes an ox, and having completed his eighth or ninth year he should be fattened for the butcher Excliange. The most economical way to milk a cow, all things considered, is to milk the two fore teats clean, leaving off with a pretty full stream, and then milk the hind ones down to a short stream, and, returning to the fore ones, milk them to the same condition, not touching the hind ones again. This will leave the teats empty, and the bag too. It is a false notion that tugging away at the teats stimulates a cow to give more milk; tut, on the contrary, emptying the bag as soon as possible yields more; then the cow can have the extra time to eat, which is a better stimulus than either. A slow milker is never tolerated in the dairy districts, and a "stripper" is an injury anywhere. The sooner a cow is milked, and all of the organs connected with feeding, digestion, and secretion are left in their natural condition, the better it is for the cow. For these reasons cows should alwavs be treated rently, and never worried, as all of these excitements and disturbances have the effect to arrest the normal action of the functions, and consequent loss in the gain of ilesh or the flow of milk. ' Old tin fruit and vegetable cans Lave been thrown into .the back' yard anj alley long enough. Instead cf disposing of them in this way, they can be used for flower-pots, and may be made very ornamental, too. Here is an opportunity for a display of the "decorative art," at present so popular. The plants will thrive if a hole is made in the bottom of the can, quite as well as in porous pots. The rust from the tin is more of a benefit to the plants than otherwise. They may be painted any color, with some pretty pictures pasted on. A NOT III: it IXV-EXTXOJ 11 X JEIlSOJff. Mr. Edison, after experimenting for two years upon it, has just produced another notable invention. It is based upon the principle of the phonograph, and called the embossing and translating system of telegraphy. . The instrument consists of a revolving disk, upon which is clamped down a sheet of paper. The surface of the disk is marked by a spiral groove, beginning at the center and gradually expanding, like a screw-thread. The disk is made to revolve by an elec tric motor, and while revolving a magnet moves over the surface, following the groove. A metallic arm holding the disk in place i3 caused to move so that the point which works in connection with the magnet keeps directly over the spiral, much the same as the point in Edison's phonograph moves over the surface of tin-foil on the revolving cylinder. The sheet of paper thereby becomes a matrix, and is a stereotype, as it were, of the characters transmitted. This indented matrix may become the medium of trans mitting the communication as many times and to as many different places as may be desired. By connecting the revolving disk with a battery the disk will be made to revolve "and automatically transmit. The great advantage of this instrument is that a message maybe sent at one time in the ordinary telegraphing wavs to a3 many places as may be desired. Mr. EJison is elated over his new invention, and expects that it will soon be put in operation everywhere. Philadelphia Times. Lkttek-bo3:es. are very freely distrib- j uted all over vIndia but it is with the j greatest difficulty that the natives can be J got to patronize them.
